I have to imagine one day the full story behind it will come out and it will either be epic ridiculousness or completely mundane tomfoolery.

I do at least give credit on them not wanting to push forward with a half-assed script for Ali's sake.

 

I think Ali having a say in the process and vetoing what probably were not-great scripts played a role. And the MCU getting cold feet in new characters and going back to memberberries. But who knows.

It’s something that need a director with a good, unique vision that also needs to play ball with Marvel and I think that’s probably a tough needle to thread, unless you’re James Gunn.
