I still have faith in Cretton with Kang Dynasty and Shang Chi 2. Down the road…another outing with Coogler once he is able to make a film or show that isn’t burdened with tragedy and subplots for other characters.

Other than that I’m just prepared to sit and enjoy the ride to keep up with the narrative without much desire for rewatching the majority of releases.

I really enjoyed this. Maybe my favorite phase four films. I didn’t really expect to see Riri that much, since I heard this was supposed to be a “back door pilot” for Ironheart, so I’m not that disappointed. I didn’t expect the death of the queen. And I don’t get reviews I read that said it was bogged down by MCU stuff. There were references to the MCU of course cause it’s a MCU movie, but I didn’t feel like it went over the top like how the first two Spider-Man movies did.

I hope for Coogler's sake that he does what he wants in life and is happy doing it.

Loved this. Did a great job following up the first film despite the awful circumstances.

Yeah, the “I hope the director is done with Marvel films” has always felt so weird to me. It’s not like these guys are being forced to make these. It’s what they’re wanting to do. If it wasn’t then Coogler wouldn’t have signed on for the sequel when he did.

They’re almost like back-handed comments towards the director’s work and effort put into these films.

it's actually a compliment to his original work and more a comment that his franchise work has continually had diminishing returns and that i wish he'd make more original stuff since he's one of the more talented young filmmakers around, but go off i guess

“This band needs to go back to making music like their first album” is how it sounds.

And seems a bit self-centered after knowing what this world and its characters mean to Coogler. So long as he is allowed to use his own voice, let the man sing.

Not calling you a self-centered person, just saying that’s how the argument feels.

It's one thing to say "I hope he makes more original films", and another to hope he does it "for his sake", which is a really arrogant attitude to take. Might as well say you hope he does it "for your sake".

Pretending that directors and actors aren't coerced into working on these films due to the market is missing a lot of context.

Citation needed that Coogler was coerced in any way. If there is not that’s a lot of assumption and an eye brow raising attempt at painting any of Coogler’s work under Marvel as not as sincere as his other works.

A pay day does not rid his Black Panther material as any less desirable or artistically rewarding.

If anything, the deadlines and pressure that would come with it could argue that he finds extreme desire and artistic reward by working with this world and its characters.

Yeah, I'm not going to say it's not happening, cause I legit don't know, but implying that any one of these actors or directors is doing this because they have to and not because they want to without a shred of evidence is insulting to their agency as creators and people.

No it isn't. It is an insult to Disney, a monopoly that is destroying the film industry.

it is fascinating that he made Black Panther and Creed post Fruitvale and nothing that wasn't a franchise film no shade or anything

That's the thing, though. We're not arguing about Disney, we're arguing about Coogler, his love for the world he is creating, and his decision to sign on when he does.

Coming into that with a higher stake in an argument about Disney is being dishonest to the heart of the conversation.

I don't give a flying fuck what's said about Disney; my beef is the implication that Coogler didn't take this role because he wanted to. Without evidence, that's just trying to create a conspiracy where there isn't one.

I think most reasonable people would agree that people do these movies for money, not because it is their dream project. Very few actors and directors can survive without working with Disney at some point.

I don't think it was Coogler's dream project, but I also don't agree with the implication that he only did it for money.

My real beef is that some fans, and this goes for every medium, not just film, but some fans find it hard to wrap their heads around why a certain talent would be onboard with something they, the fan, doesn't like, and I think the answer usually is that the person in question doesn't see things the same way as the fan.

I'm trying to avoid speaking like I know anything about Coogler's mindset, cause I don't, but it's entirely possible for there to be a middle ground where he thought this was a good opportunity, both financially and creatively.

To add more context to my post, the implication at the end of all this is that if Coogler had more clout and/or money, he wouldn't be doing this.

That's impossible to know, and removing any agency he has in conducting his business.
