The Ironheart stuff isn’t great but there’s maybe two set pieces that involve the suit at all

The first 15 minutes are paced oddly, imo, but I really enjoyed everything afterwards. Wright and Bassett are the stand outs. Left wanting more of Namor (more in common with Kilmonger than most are probably anticipating) and am interested how Riri carries her own show.

It’s definitely no BP1, but it’s obvious Coogler wasn’t aiming for that and what he does aim for, he lands.

this was really good, possibly better than Black Panther 1 imo. absolutely powerhouse performances from Bassett, Gurira and (real world bullshit aside) Wright. hard to believe it's Huerta's first role too he's amazing

the parts of this movie that are just mournful and elegaic are absolutely stunning. beautifully directed and acted stuff, just the visuals and soundtrack alone are goosebump inducing. the silly comic book stuff is mostly good too, definitely suffers from some bland action and Ironheart feeling shoehorned in, but it's not really enough to sink the movie. you couldn't ask much more from a comic book movie about loss and grief really

kind of glad I watched this in an empty theatre, because I was a snotty mess, but I bet that Killmonger cameo would absolutely pop off in a packed one lmao

good film that i had a lot of issues with. way more baked into the mcu than the last one being arguably the chief complaint. also wish there was more cohesion and less runtime. but everyone on the bill nails it and coogler manages to make the best of the obvious tragedy. a scene in the second half where t'challa is alluded to is as remarkable as it gets

This was a nice slow burn of a movie, and a fitting tribute to Boseman. The acting was definitely top-notch.

For me, this was much better than the first, but I’ve not been as high on that as most were

The Chadwick/T'Challa montage at the end got me pretty good

Eh, it’s was fine. Needed way more M’Baku. It dragged for me, really felt the length. By the time they finally got to the final fight, it was so hard for me to care about a big CGI fight. A good bit of the fights were a bit too shaky for me and the slo mo got very old for me didn’t feel like it was done effectively. And it seemed like that was just a normal human spear at the end. If so, how did it penetrate the vibranium suit? And it just felt so bizarre to me when Namor calls his people off at the end when they have like 200 of them surrounding like 20 Wakandans. Like, the odds are in your favor and you are now back over the ocean looking totally rejuvenated.

Ultimately, the movie just didn’t really work for me.

performances were good. It’s always good to see MBJ. M’Baku was great in the little he has to do. I dunno. It was okay.

I don’t know where else to say this but every trailer before this movie in my theater was a movie starring Jonathan Majors. Pretty wild

I think this mostly serves as a great tribute to Chadwick and T’Challa. The grief is palpable and not in that kind of phony way it is for Tony Stark. I appreciate that Ryan Coogler didn’t shy away from that or let it go after the funeral. It lingers through the whole film. I also like that the Boseman flashbacks are not set to some cheesy music. It’s just breathing. Nice touch.

The rest of the movie: Way too long. The middle sags. Namor and his people are, like, vaguely interesting. But you never get a good sense of where he lives or what makes it special besides the vibranium. I do like the theme of evil infiltrating the good in Shuri, but it also feels like it kind of comes out of nowhere (maybe it’ll be more apparent on a second watch). Iron Heart is fine. I’m interested in seeing her show. She interacted well with Shuri.

The CIA stuff - Absolute snooze. Cut all that out of there. Absolutely nothing of value other than to say “Hey, Julia Louis-Dreyfus is still meddling in the MCU.”

The big, dumb CGI fights are Coogler’s weakness. They were the weakest part of the first one and they’re pretty weak here.

That said, all things considered, it’s fine. It’s aiming for deeper stuff than most MCU movies, even if it misses the mark at times. The performances are great across the board.

The magic of the first is how self contained it is. This is not. But that’s the MCU for ya.

If you take a shot every time there’s a chyron for a city or country, you will absolutely cross over into the ancestral plane.

I guess I don't see this as all that more MCU-beholden than the first film. I mean we had Boseman, Freeman and Serkis' characters all coming back from previous movies in that one; part of the trick was how it made it look pretty effortless (a bit less so for Serkis lol). this one definitely awkwardly works in JLD, but everything else feels pretty natural/essential to the story imo. even the obligatory post-credits is just the second half of the final scene we already saw

I'm definitely gonna be in the minority on going ride-or-die for this I'm sure. that's fine, but give Bassett and Gurira their Emmys for that scene with Okoye, at the least, I beg you

Shuri? I’m just assuming the herb gave her some minor healing powers or we are to assume a 500 year old warrior missed vital organs somehow. I mean, when she freed herself, the part of the spear that was in her had zero blood on it. So, whatever haha!

I agree with all of that. The approach to grief of both Chadwick and T’Challa was interesting and well handled. Having the start of the credits be the garb being burned away really encapsulated the whole film being about moving on from the mourning process.

Yea, none of it felt forced to me. I didn’t have any issues with any of it. Even JLD, given the story, it made sense for Ross to have a superior. So why not use a known character?

Actually really enjoyed this and thought it was handled well. Acting was great (loved Namor, hope to see Huerta in more) and the score was great. The best MCU film in awhile and probably because it didn’t feel or look like a typical one. Coogler definitely makes a difference.

Bassett is fantastic but I think I'm just burnt out on MCU. I'd prefer to just get a Wakanda story without any MCU tie-in. The tropes and format of the movie follow closely to that of standard MCU fare, the cast just elevates the acting piece,

Just got back from seeing this. The acting was great, especially Wright, Bassett and the guy that played Namor. That said, this film felt like it was 4 hours. The plot was kind of all over the place. Also Riri’s suit looked like it belonged in power rangers.

    7/10

  23. Enjoyed this for the most part. Some of the action was cool, but then it would get bogged down by cgi/green screen nonsense. Solid performances across the board. I'd probably rank this about the same as the first movie.

After seeing this I’m also fully on board with them recasting and bring back T’Challa. That will never happen now though

The mid-credits scene suggests who’s next in line, right? They can just do a time jump.
