I think I like Guardians of the Galaxy more, and Spider-Man Homecoming (mainly due to my Spider-Man bias), but otherwise yeah, I think it beats most of them. Also think Killmonger is the best cinematic villain Marvel has ever had, with Killgrave being the best TV villain.

I'll be honest, I've still never seen a single Thor film, though. Just have zero interest in him.

Also, am I crazy, or could anyone else hear Kaluuya's British accent finding its way in every now and then? Was surprised because I think he hides it very well with an American accent.

interesting stuff i dug up while futzing around looking at the numbers:

    - 15th largest opening weekend worldwide all time
    - 5th largest in north america
    - biggest stand-alone character marvel opening
    - biggest marvel opening overall since Avengers 1

pretty wild. definitely hope it leads to more incorporations of wakanda in the MCU going forward

After watching it for the second time I would put it in 5th place, however, it’s very difficult for me to choose between Black Panther and Guardians Vol 2. Phase 3 has been phenomenal.

    1) The Avengers
    2) Winter Solider
    3) Civil War
    4) Doctor Strange
    5) Black Panther

I feel sorry for Infinity War because Black Panther is a heavy movie to follow.

My university also gave me a Black Panther shirt after the showing. I can always use more shirts.

The main pull for me to watch Thor movies is Loki. Until Thor: Ragnorak I didn’t care much for Thor.

I really liked this movie. There is a lot to love here. What I said the first night about those deeper themes and ideas really makes this a strong movie.

But the action scenes have a lot of visual issues with being too shaky with the camera and just being too noticeably CGI heavy in a lot of them. Both of those things really take me out of the moment and makes it so that I can’t poasibly make this my favorite.

It's amazing that they are, how many movies, in and they are still doing new standalone movies that are fucking amazing and groundbreaking. I never thought I would see Black Panther in cinema (Infinity War is a completely different story) and I'm sure that there will be more. Marvel do not disappoint and this was a great step forward.

EDIT: Can't spell due to excitement.

  10. A film's quality and its social significance are not mutually exclusive. La La Land is a better crafted film than Moonlight, but it doesn't do anything. As far as Marvel movies, Black Panther >>>>>

I know you’re just speaking to your personal opinion... but your last post was so definitive about BP being the best Marvel movie, yet you haven’t even seen them all.

    Just seems funny to me.

Doctor Strange is good if you're into multi-dimensional stuff and vibrant colors. It's kind of like Harry Potter for Marvel as well. As for Thor 2, if you didn't like Iron Man 2 then you probably won't like Thor 2. Iron Man 2 and Thor 2 are usually the last Marvel films on anyones list

Too early to tell for me personally, but Im glad some people love it that much. Initially Ill say that Civil War, Winter Solider, Iron Man, Avengers, Guardians, and Ragnarok are above it for me. Whats sad is I think Black Panther easily has the best characters, villains, themes, emotion and most importance/significance out of all of them. Like not even close.

However, the problems I had with it and the amount of times I was taken out really just mitigate my visceral feeling about it. Cant control that. Could change with time though. Ive only seen it once.

I don't think La La Land is a "better crafted" film than Moonlight. Both are supremely well-made, but just because one has dazzling musical sequences and really noticeably beautiful practical set designs and the other is more restrained and naturalistic doesn't speak to how well they're made. They're doing extremely different things.

I'd also disagree that La La Land "doesn't do anything". It's a really well told relationship story with some very poignant things to say about relationships and ambition and being an artist. Moonlight's message is tied to being about racial and sexual identity, which is of course important, but I think it's unfair sometimes when conversations about movies separate movies about non-white, non-male, non-cis, non-straight people to being about "important issues" and let white movies just be universal. Moonlight is about a lot more than racial and sexual identity, too.

As simple as dull as it sounds, I just grade films based on how re-watchable they are for me. That's why The Dark Knight and The Social Network are my two favorite films and it's how I chose the top 5 for my Marvel list. I can re-watch any scene from them and be entertained.

I appreciate great story telling but a great and meaningful story can be executed poorly while a film with mediocre story telling can be very fun to watch. Dialogue is another thing I look for but that is part of the entertainment.

But he doesn’t know that! Haha

They wanted the eyes to be visible like in the comics. Also, T'Challa had to take the rite of passage by getting a new uniform in each film he is in. I do agree that the Civil War mask looks better. The new mask is too slim.

interesting proposition. PTA, Jeff Nichols, Tarantino, Steve McQueen, Malick, Spike, Wes Andersen are the closest ones that are coming to mind

I don't have a strong preference between the two. I think I like the shape of the new mask overall more while liking the layout of the silver more in Civil War, but just slightly in both cases. Both look sweet.

On the note of costume aesthetics, part of me would like at least one scene in one movie where the mask doesn't have those silver flourishes on the mask, and where he's wearing a cape. Through in some gold flourishes in the costume. Like, the full on Marvel Knights-era, Christopher Priest run's aesthetic. The sleeker costume is the norm in the comics and is the better choice for live action, but that in-your-face royal vibe is super cool and should happen at least once.

i heard enough about doctor strange to feel confident that it isn't the best lol. thor 2 came out so long ago and i've seen enough of the others that it didn't feel necessary for context. and it looks to probably be the worst of the MCU lol
