I feel like it would weaken the story if she didn't actually commit the crime. The question at the heart of the episode is pondering if the punishment is fair, which depends on the original crime being committed. That being said, I think a reasonable argument can be made that, due to the memory wipes, the person we see in the story is not actually the same person who committed the crime. Sure its the same body, but is it the same person? That question of identity is part of why I love the episode so much.
I had such high hopes for USS Callister and what a letdown. I love the concept and themes, but it was really sloppy science fiction writing, no attention to detail. Oh well onto the next episode. Even when its bad this series is so much fun.
??? USS Callister was the best of the season imo, with Hang the DJ after. This season is getting a lot of flak on this site, not sure why. The storytelling is still gripping, performances are great throughout, cinematography is beautiful— only downside is the tech isn’t as flawlessly conceived. Maybe it’s just me but I’ve always watched this series for the Twilight Zone factor, never really needed the details of the tech to be perfect. The stories, the characters, the themes explored— all that is enough for me.
People have completely unreasonable expectations based on a perception of the first two seasons that isn’t actually reality. THe first two seasons kind of have a mythical quality about them to fans of the show that doesn’t match their actually quality. All 4 seasons of this show have been incredible. We just have a different set of preconceptions now
One interesting trend I've noticed is the way in which non-physical or digital versions of people are increasingly becoming the actual subjects in the show, just as "real" as physical people, as the lines between the physical and digital world begin to blur. Like in the show's early days, it mostly consisted of physical bodies interacting with technology as a separate entity (even in the more futuristic episodes like 15 Million Merits). Although it really kicked off in White Christmas, in this season at least three of the six episodes have strong elements in which digital entities are themselves the actual characters, just as valid as the physical ones. I'm not sure if it's a commentary on how we are increasingly living our lives "away" from bodies, but it's an interesting thought.
I literally googled all of them and then of course forgot what the actual animal in the episode looked like at that point so I turned to google bc I'm a freak who can't let things go and this article backs me up 'Black Mirror' creator answers our 'Crocodile' ending questions
Finished them all, my S4 rankings: Hang the DJ USS Callister Black Museum Arkangel Metal Head Crocodile
People ITT not knowing basic rodentian morphology. And I thought the unbridled racism was bad. This is a new low.
Maybe some of us enjoy each show differently, its really not that hard to understand if you accept the fact that not everyone likes what you like. I don't disagree with the things you liked about it, but there were just way too many "oh come on" plot conveniences in USS Callister for me. Not a big deal.
I enjoyed every single episode of Season 4. Callister was my clear favorite though. Very hard for me to rank the other episodes. To me, none really stood out more than the next, but I certainly liked them all.
Hang the DJ USS Callister Crocodile Black Museum Arkangel Metalhead I think I liked this season better than S3, overall.
Help me clarify the ultimate message of Hang the DJ: Reject societal customs and trust your gut when it comes to love and things will work out. Right? Also, I took the glances and smirks of the two characters in the final scene of that episode to mean that they both recalled what their simulation selves experienced through the app.
Did Netflix get some files crossed and accidentally air some random show in place of where metalhead should've been? How was that a black mirror episode?
metalhead was great. especially since it was one of the few episodes this season not centered around the cookie or replicated consciousness concepts.
Finally finished S4. Hang The DJ was fuckin depressing as all hell until the end. Felt very San Junipero-ish. Up there with White Christmas and Playtest for my favorite episodes. Also get McPoyle a damn award already
