One listen and this is like the inverse of Ants for me. That was my favorite record of that year. I find this to be kind of annoying. Obviously without Isaac they are kind of just a different band now, but I hate that it’s not for me anymore.
Yeah, it's been a while since I've been so disappointed with an album/band. I'll keep track of them for future releases and see how they evolve but I think it's over. This is so incredibly boring and would not be of any interest at all to me, if not for the context of the previous albums and how good they are.
Album sounds like experimental Camera Obscura mixed with Joanna Newsom. Adore it. Haven’t listened to the band’s other stuff though, so I guess this is radically different?
I wouldn't say radically -- there is definitely some similar stuff on the live album -- but the further back you go, the more different it becomes. First album is post-punk.
Sadly agree with this post....wanted to like this so bad...but just not for me...will always have Ants though!~
Socks is finally starting to click, realising the meandering thing is a feature not a bug. very Syd Barrettesque tune
Still loving this thing a lot. The opening of Two Horses reminds me of a Jessica Pratt song, which sent me on a small Jessica Pratt kick last night, haha.
Cold Country to Nancy to Forever Howlong is simply a breathtaking run and my wish is for this record to click with everyone. The switch to these womens' perspectives from Isaac's is so fucking interesting and satisfying. So much depth to this band
This twee ass record is the perfect antidote to the complete oversaturation of nu metal and shoegaze revival we're living in right now.
mary may not be the best track from this but it is my favorite - i stop in my tracks for four minutes every time.
There's so much to discuss with this band's lore, but even just finding through-lines between the multiple voices here is so rich and fun. The record is dense, but because of the instrument choices and nuanced feminine perspectives, it's way ahead of Ants for me. Heavy and light balanced. Just a very considered and intentional record.
I listened to this daily for the last month, it’s grown on me a ton. Def my favorite BC,NR album at this point. “Socks” blows me away every time
I just found out about the different order of the track listing on the collectors edition. Changes the order of the track list of the last songs, and splits Forever / How long into 2 at the pause. Ends on For the Cold Country
