Ok, but, the 2003 Hulk is actually a super compelling take that takes a lot of big swings, with a batting average that's imperfect but way better than a lot of people gave it credit for.

I haven't seen this yet, but whether it works for me or not, I imagine its strengths and weaknesses are gonna be quite different from that one!

The funniest thing about this movie is that I didn't care about this movie at all but my friends wanted me to come so I went into this not knowing The Rock was the star of the film so here I am like 30 minutes into the film wondering why the fuck Black Adam, the movie this was named after, hasn't made an appearance yet.

i'm not a big fan of superhero movies so I already didn't expect to like this, but yeah not good. Felt like there was no real plot and was just a bunch of action scenes thrown together.

The movie was a 12 out of 10 in its coolness factor. Also between Suicide Squad 2 and this I noticed how somewhat “progressive” DC can be with its geopolitics. Sadly, it suffered from some bad pacing and tone problems. It was funny at times earning laughs, but at the same time there were moments where it felt a little off in between the seriousness of it all. As for the characters, I didn’t feel for any of them and that ending kinda squeezed the whole finale together. In all, as cool as this movie was I was let down. I think Shazam, being the solid movie it was had my hopes up, but this kinda brought it back to earth with the usual DC inadequacies.

Also, they shoulda made Hawkman’s mace bigger like Hawk girl’s in the Justice League Animate Series. Shayera really swang that shit. When that connected it really packed a punch. When Hawkman’s mace started spinning it looked pathetic and like a children’s toy. Still, Hawkman’s was cool and he gave off big Hawkanda Forever vibes.

Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad were good. Aquaman and Shazam weren't as good but at least they were fun. This wasn't good or fun. It was very much just okay. Like, overwhelmingly mediocre, as it draws from other, better comic book movies. It's a poor attempt at copying/catching up to Marvel--who by the way has had a very strong Phase 4 in terms of movies, imo--instead of doing what DC does best, having each of their things do their own thing. The serious parts were taken too seriously, the jokes didn't land, Dwayne used 0% of his charm (you mean to tell me this is the same guy who voiced Maui in Moana?), and I didn't care about any of the characters. I've only seen Doctor Fate in Young Justice but he seemed a lot less like a Doctor Strange knockoff than he does in this. I'm glad to see that there are now two Polynesian DC film leads and it's cool that Cavill is back but this was mostly pretty disappointing. Cyclone, though, wowzers, she is way too cool and I am way too gay

Saw this a couple of days ago and liked it more than expected, gonna paste what I text my friend that’s waaaay more into DC than I am

    Negatives first

Some of the jokes were pretty lame
First 20-30 minutes are a lot of exposition/backstory
There’s an annoying kid (but I do love that DC movies keep having excited kids that love heroes)
Black Adam is the least fun character somehow
They do a lot of flashbacks to pre-powers Black Adam (called Teth-Adam) and they do a weird cgi thing where they put normal Rock’s head on a smaller body, like in Captain America 1. It looks bad and weird every time

    Positives

The entire Justice Society RULES, but they don’t give a ton to Atom Smasher & Cyclone
They do a really really great job making Hawkman a top tier hero, he’s fucking awesome
Dr Fate also rules, his powers are so sick
Awesome fights all around showing off the JSA’s powers
Super freaky demon villain, pretty frightening

I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. JSA we’re all pretty great, although I hated how Cyclone’s powers looked. Main kid was annoying as hell. Overall better than most of Marvels recent output.

look forward to BA returning, even if it’s not a direct sequel

    Okay, finally saw this.

    I actually really liked it?

Framing Black Adam as a liberator really works to just make you side with him on the killing people thing.

Got some T2 vibes with BA and the kid.

All of the JSA was great.

Weak villain, and it does devolve to a big CGI fight. But it worked for me. I had fun and enjoyed my viewing.

Nice to see Cavil back and in a suit with music that made the cult angry.

It’s kind of dumb, but sometimes that’s what I enjoy.

  20. Watched this last night and honestly enjoyed it quite a bit, given that I went in with pretty low expectations.

Love the Rock as a person but not a huge fan of his films so wasn’t sure how much I’d like this. Once it got through the super long opening it was a solid action movie. Loved the JSA.

Only bummer was realizing that this very likely won’t get followed up on with a Black Adam Superman or Black Adam Shazam showdown that I would love to see.

Watching this now and all the skateboard scenes are like something out of a cheesy 90s movie.

  23. A lot of bad dialogue but this was definitely not as a bad as I expected. I really liked the Justice Society, especially Doctor Fate (although his powers looked way too similar to Dr. Strange's) and Hawkman. With better lines and direction I'd love to see more of them. Atom Smasher's lines were probably the dumbest next to Black Adam's, they sounded pretty much AI-generated.

There was something about the look and setting of the movie here that I really liked. Maybe the fact that the entire thing takes place in an Egyptian-esque town instead of New York or whatever.

It was stuffed with a lot of dumb stuff but overall this was really entertaining, a lot better than most of the DCEU and some MCU. I'll say I'm actually sad we don't get to see Cavill vs. Dwayne with his lousy acting and all.
