....But after giving this album 3 or 4 listens today, unfortunately "Arisen My Senses" is definitely the best song on here. I think this album suffers the same problems as Vulnicura , there's too much bloat and not enough joy. I understand that Vulnicura was a very "serious" album, so I guess that's forgivable in that case, but considering this was described as a "Tinder" album and is named "Utopia", I was hoping for something a bit more spontaneous and joyful (which is definitely my favourite Bjork mood). I think what I love most about her earlier stuff was that she was basically making pop songs. They were odd and unusual and recorded live in a toilet, or with beatboxers, or micro-beats, or with classical arrangements, but she was / is a fantastic pop songwriter, which she was doing all the way from Debut up to Biophillia. On Vulnicura and this - she's stopped writing pop songs, which I think for me personally is a shame. I also think this suffers more than most lyrically - she's never been a particularly good lyricist (and it's never mattered to me when the music and songwriting was that good), but now I feel the stumbles and clumsy wording more apparent. There's a lot to digest in here and a lot of layers, so I'm sure I'll warm up to it later, but first listen is a bit disappointed. Arisen My Senses absolutely kills though.
yeah - she lost interest in that as of late which is a shame Björk's got to do what Björk's got to do I guess not her fault, ours
I haven't listened yet but this saddens me. That's definitely my favourite side of her and I was hoping this would swing back in that direction.
Gotta agree with @George overall that I truly miss the pop of it all. That being said, this album is super pretty and served as really calming music as i was just doing some tasks around the house. It's long, and mostly the same mood throughout, makes it tough to really sift through so much
Hmm. Unfortunately, I am not digging this at much as I had hoped. Most of it feels pleasant, but pretty one note. Then tracks like Losss are just unnecessarily abrasive. I’m a huge fan of dissonance in music, but on tracks like that it feels a little disjointed. It could be that I need to spend more time with it because what I’m hearing sounds really good, but it’s not really clicking. Remove the vocals and it reminds me of the Shadow of the Colossus score or music from Zelda of something (which isn’t a bad thing).
been listening to a ton of Björk lately, especially Post, Homogenic and Vespertine - all 10/10s she is def a top 10 artist for me (maybe even top 5!) even if the post-Medulla albums haven’t resonated that much with me
