This will be the year of the bird for me. I'm gonna go on a beginner's tour this month and then hit up the local Audubon Center at the end of the month also this site fkin rules, it shows you sites near you and lists all the species spotted and everything. Even just the regular parks near me where I take my daughter have tons of species https://ebird.org/home
hell yeah going on a free beginners guided walking tour on the 13th. They're gonna lend me some binoculars. This will age me 40 years
Good thread, birds are dope. A while ago I was walking my dog in the morning and I heard a crazy sound and way down the street I saw something huge in a palm tree. Turned out to be a gigantic scarlet macaw. Definitely was someone's pet that got out or something. It shocks everyone when they come across them, but there are actually flocks of wild green parrots in SoCal. They're loud as fuck and annoying whenever they're around. I've been wanting to befriend a crow, my girlfriend was telling me if you keep giving them stuff they remember you and will start bringing you little shiny gifts.
I remember seeing little flocks of parakeets in Florida every so often and thinking it was crazy then I remembered I was in Florida
There's a bunch of escaped parrots and parakeets living around Busch Gardens in Tampa. My friend lived near there and it was always wild to sometimes just walk outside and see some parrots in the tree.
Live in Florida: can confirm seeing parrots or parakeets out in the wild is not an uncommon thing. There is a whole Flock of freed canaries that hang out around one tree down the street from me.
I was only outside for a bit but didn’t see even one, it was sad. Knowing this makes me wonder if they were all at the convention around that time…
Bird journal 1/7/24 Went to the zoo. Saw some big goddamn birds and some loud goddamn birds. Hornbills are fkin dinosaur looking mfers
Bird journal 1/8/2024 Carolina Wrens are one of the more common birds we get in the backyard here. Those things make so many different noises, including a bunch of cool duets Everyone should download the Merlin app. Just stand in your backyard, start recording, then watch it ID a bunch of birds. So cool
super cool and super common, at least here. one of the few birds I can ID by its call too bad the team SUCKS
One time when I was golfing I saw an egret pick a gopher out of a hole toss it in the air and swallow it whole.
since making this post, I have acquired more. We’ve got a cardinal in our backyard right now, too. He’s very handsome.
Bird Journal 1/9/2024 Think I saw a Bewick's Wren today. I sometimes read in a chair in the driveway during my lunch break if the weather is nice and we have a massive tree in the front yard. little guy wouldn't call loud enough for me to ID him
Bird Journal 1/10/24 Big bird day. Finally got a calendar for the year Then I'm working and my wife texts me this (I WFH): Turned out to be a Lesser Goldfinch. Don't see those too often!
