went birding on Saturday at a lake. Didn't add anything new to my list, but I see 7 Wild Turkeys, which aren't very common here. Also had a stare down with three coyotes lol Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S251020717
hell yeah got my wife's best friend to download Merlin and she recorded 14 different birds in her backyard then she was like 'so now what. how do I make this app fun?' the fun is the joy of hearing so many different birds right in your backyard! next, you learn which birds make which calls/songs, and then you get a feeder and watch them!
moved to a new house. feeders are up and already got some House Finches visiting. Fastest feeder setup to bird visitors ever. And they are REAL finches, not the AI slop @angrycandy posted
took a walk to a little copse of trees at the end of our street that stand in a huge open field. Been able to see Common Nighthawks every evening flying around catching bugs. Pretty cool considering I'd never seen one before. New place rules for birding
I love both those guys. Sure do miss Cardinals at the feeders. We had them every day before we moved. Now it's 100% nothing but female House Finches
long time bird enjoyer over here, one of the weirdest things just happened. I'm at work and was talking to a coworker in their office earlier. I commented on how it sounded like there was chirping coming from somewhere in the room (which has a chimney). They thought it was their chair squeaking when they moved but then sat still for a few moments and still heard the chirping. Turns out a literal new born, completely featherless chimney swallow was just sitting there IN the chimney on the floor. Poor thing must've fallen through the chimney from its nest to the floor??? Thank goodness the chimney isn't active. Its an old brick one that was filled with pink insulation years ago so I imagine the little guy must've broken their fall on the insulation. Luckily not a scratch on the chick and it was responding really well when we moved it into to a container to transport it. My co-worker ended up leaving to bring it to a local animal rehabber thank goodness so fingers crossed it can survive without its mother.
Florida is sick because you just see huge Great Egrets everywhere pretty regularly. I saw one the other day just chilling by the gas station.
those things are funny. affectionately called the 'flying cigar' because of their shape. They have a part of their brain that basically stays on so they can fly while they sleep. They literally can fly all day! One of my biggest regrets in my life is getting into birding after leaving Florida
set up a hummingbird feeder in the new place and already got one visitor this morning also have a window feeder right next to my desk in my office
lmao we just moved and these are the only birds I get at the feeder. there were 3 on my window feeder not half an hour ago
Help me identify one that I see all the time. I live in South Los Angeles County. They're pretty common this time of year. About the size of a house finch, black with a lighter belly, little bit of a longer tail, and a little crested head.
and another one... First time I've seen one that I can think of, at least in this area. Looks like a hawk, but much bigger than the ones we usually see (I think the common ones around here are called Cooper's Hawks) and unlike a Cooper's Hawk that has a greyish beak it has a noticeably orangish/yellow beak.
