I really appreciate so much of what she's doing here - the honesty and maturity of the lyrics, the improvements to her voice, the overall quality of the songwriting. But I'm not sure this one's for me. Guess I was just hoping for some more outright bops. Maybe I need to come back to it with a more open frame of mind.
I enjoyed this way more than I expected! The singles work much better in context of the album. Even though it is so mid-tempo, I found her vocals to be more melodically focused which worked a treat for me. Excited to listen more - her debut had a handful of standout tracks but most of it wasn’t for me. This is great, she’s grown so much as an artist already
Yea her lyrics on this are across the board great, definitely what draws me the most to this album. I don't mind the mid-tempo, obviously not as instantly gratifying but definitely still substantive. I love that this is the album that she chose to do after When We All Fall Asleep, it's really neat and knowing how much less pressure there was for her to make it how she wanted to
Can’t listen to the rest until a little later, but if the first song is any indication, I am going to love this.
her vocals seem a bit one note to me on this so far, just using the same tricks and styles over and over again but maybe it gets more varied I’m about halfway in
I definitely was way more into the second half of this but I think its a strong album overall. definitely less immediate and ostentatious than the debut but seen as a reaction to her huge success, I think it works.
Ah nevermind, I restarted my Spotify and it appeared again. That was weird. Also I'm on my second full listen now and damn I'm liking this album A LOT more the second time around. Might need to run down to target and grab that blue vinyl now.
Had no idea this was out! I haven't really loved the two latest singles, but still excited to check this out. Was not expecting 16 tracks haha this is a long one
Record absolutely picks up after not my responsibility which I think is on purpose Oxytocin should have been single #2 instead of Lost Cause however
Just realizing that Not My Responsibility was the little interlude that was used in her arena tour that got cut short due to covid.
First listen was quite good. Nothing outside I Didn’t Change My Number stood out, but her debut was always going to be tough to follow up. Will definitely be returning to it.
Listened in the car yesterday for the first time and the road noise made a lot of the lyrics hard to make out, so I’ve definitely got to sit down with this a bit before forming any real opinion, though nothing outside of the title track really grabbed me immediately. That song may be the best of her career to date, though.
Funny how many reactions have been, “This didn’t grab me but it might be her best.” That was my first reaction. A few listens in now and I think it’s incredible. Weird comparison, but the super blunt honesty and narrative approach to the record reminds me of something like Carrie & Lowell, except swap out grieving loss for grieving fame. I love the way it builds in intensity in the second half as if the fame gets heavier and heavier as the record progresses. And goodness. She’s only 19!!
