I think “Happy With You” is an odd inclusion. But like Lenker has said if you prefer a live version listen to that. I always found the live cut to eventually lead to something that was a little angrier, like coping, or denial. This one is definitely sunnier. It’ll just take some getting used to.
I like this, and it sounds like it loops back to “Incomprehensible”, but I’m glad they left it off. I prefer “How Could I Have Known”
"Words" is one of their best songs they should get Frisell on the next one "No Fear" bass is perfect, vibe is perfect, drums are so smooth. that's gotta be Laraaji on the percussion (it is) very cool that Laraaji is on every track one way or another except the title still love Laraaji on Grandmother, track does get a little schmaltzy during the rock n roll part but it works Happy With You has that perfect bass tone I love How Could I Have Known great closer, feels like the end of a movie or a hard journey. def get the neil vibes don't think this beats DNWM to me but I love the direction they're going especially instrumentation wise
They've never really connected with me before, but this one is hitting. Maybe just heard it at the right time/in the right mood. I'll have to revisit some of the other albums.
don't think this is topping any of their other works for me unfortunately. nice vibes but I'm not finding a lot to really grab onto, and the 6-8 run is just rough for me
I won’t begin to know how this stacks up probably until a few years with it. my opinions on their discography have evolved so much over my time and my level of fandom has only increased. I love each album to the point where when any one of them is playing I am convinced it has to be their best, then I play another and feel the exact same. I probably hold UFOF to be my absolute favorite, with maybe Dragon as the runner up, but really they are all so fucking good, Double Infinity included, that they’re all worthy of being in someone’s top spot. but at the end of the day, I feel similarly to how I felt with the new Deftones record, it doesn’t have to be my new favorite record by the band, it’s just enough for me that it’s another great entry in the band’s catalog. idk, I have grown very weary of the need to immediately rank and qualify new records mere hours after release.
I feel grateful that this record exists inside of their discography because it gives me something their other records don’t. The looping ethereal atmospheric river is another tool they have in their bag, another record I can reach from when I just need to vibe out.
not ranking anything (or trying to lol, pages full of rankings make me go crosseyed) just simply stating how I feel at this point in time. could certainly change, could also not
it doesn’t really sound like UFOF, but it reminds me most of UFOF of all of their records simply bc it sets a very distinct and strong mood/atmosphere/tone/etc from the jump and really just plays within that the whole time.
I like this. Didn’t floor me first listen but it’s good. I was expecting happy with you to be absolute dog shit from the reactions I’ve seen online and it’s not bad at all haha
Kind of surprised at the reception in here because to my ears it sounds like the best band of our time making another perfect album
I really enjoyed my first listen of this. I get why someone might be off put by Happy With You but it didn’t bother me. Words is awesome
The closer is the one for me on this. *whispers* I don’t know why but it weirdly reminds me of Pig by weezer the first verse haha
Yeah, I also love the closer - and the rest of the album. No Fear is still probably my least favorite, but it’s good and not at all disruptive to the flow of the album like I worried after my first listen.
