There's also a lot of legal issues with Kelis and her back catalog, so it cuts deeper for her. Legally, everything correct was done to get the song sampled, but yeah it sounds like Kelis personally wasn't approached for her signoff
Lot of beef with Pharrell and her over all of this too. I think at one point Pharrell said he wishes he had given Britney Spears “Milkshake” instead of to Kelis.
Yeah, the feud between Pharrell and Kelis is sad, considering how good they worked together. Pharrell kind of screwed a lot of people over by prioritizing himself over all the artists he signed to Star Trak.
I wasn’t sure how much I was feeling this but then the chorus in Alien Superstar hit. Unreal good song.
Kelis is clearly in the right, but it is kind of tricky since she doesn’t own the song and didn’t necessarily have to be credited. It is weird how you’ll hear from Father John Misty or Ezra Koenig how she reached out to them for “Lemonade.” You would think she’d do the same for Kelis. Then again, you would also think Pharrell would have the sense to not sample someone who has an active beef with him and has accused him of stealing the rights to her music.
Pharrell is the shittiest person involved here, but Kelis is right on every point. A phone call is not hard. Her stans are really toxic in the comments also.
Front to back dance jams as expected. Only have listened to it unbroken on an early morning subway ride, so going to hold off forming an opinion until Saturday night.
This album is pretty incredible, but let’s not act like Kelis didn’t already do this whole thing on Flesh Tone. Damn monkeypox got me staying away from the club but I really want to to go dance on a dark sweaty dancefloor to this tonight.
