Yeah if he thinks it should be that long then it should be that long. What the hell does the studio know. He’s made A24 a lot of money, they should shut up and let him do his thing.
I think it's completely fair to request a truncated version as long as the original version exists as well. Especially if theater-goers get a chance to see either. The studio still needs to maximize profits and that's going to be way harder to do with a movie that long not released by Marvel, it's just the truth.
If I worked at A24 I would do a wide release of the "theatrical cut" but urge theaters to play one showing of the directors cut each day to start
A24 aren’t amateurs and have their name on many more great movies than Ari Aster does. Afaik we really have no reason to believe they’d sacrifice something essential from a film just to meet some arbitrary runtime, I trust that their request to tighten it up was probably constructive
I mean his last movie had a longer directors cut that had important scenes removed from the theatrical cut so...
Like... how “important” are we talking here? Haha. Genuinely asking, I haven’t seen the director’s cut of that one. I know you’re never gonna miss what you don’t know is there, but in no way does the theatrical cut of Midsommar feel incomplete to me
I'm not saying they're going to make the movie unwatchable or not make sense but I know many people, myself included, think the directors cut makes the film a fair bit stronger and adds more context to how certain things play out. I was definitely surprised at some of the scenes that were cut. I'm sure if he does trim it down for them it'll still be a fantastic film, I'd just rather watch his version, especially if it's similar to the Midsommar situation. Steve's idea of releasing both versions would be interesting, see which version people would rather see. Idk how easy that would be though.
It'd be really easy, you'd just have to send each theater two DCPs (masters essentially) and they could either take it from there and program to their will, or you set up a deal with the theaters of what they will play
lol it isn’t like he didn’t have a longer cut of midsommar and that both weren’t released. y’all get up in arms about literally everything
I’m not sitting in a theatre for that long, I’ll wait til it’s on streaming and watch a chunk every night for a week.
I lost interest when people started complaining that four threads at a time were too much. Someone else can do it if they want.
No because sometimes that's 90 minutes long which is a movie, what if television was available in quick bites
