Idk if it made it into my interview but he specifically mentioned KennyHoopla while talking about Boomer!
I was just thinking that both Boomer and Kelly are waaaaaaay too compressed and distorted, hurting my enjoyment of a record that is just amazing from a songwriting perspective. The weird "drunk" syncopated hi-hats on Kelly also throw me as well. Otherwise I'm loving this record.
Amazing I had no idea Mustang was in reference to Mustang, OK. I basically lived there for 5 months (Yukon, OK) for work.
Well deserved. I've been listening to this 3-4 times a day. The array of styles and melodies makes the replay value super high.
When's the last time a new artist with like 60k monthly listeners on Spotify got BNM? That's huge for him.
Quite often tbh. This year alone there was Special Interest, Lyra Pramuk, Beatrice Dillon, KeiyaA, Jyoti (and maybe some others) all of whom have 15k-35k monthly listeners. Still, it'll be a boost for him. I wasn't sure if they were going to go with the BNM since they had kinda been ignoring him up until this point. Not even a news post about the album announcement.
this is really sticking with me. apple music seems to only be showing a few singles from him other than this album, does he have any other full releases?
The National covers EP - basically expanded into a mini-album retroactively - should be on there too. He released an EP as Bartees and the Strange Fruit a few years back (plus some other stuff which is basically impossible to find); it's on YouTube.
It took me two listens to really make sense of this, but I’m on board. As others have said, it’s wild how much ground this covers in 35 minutes. He has not only the ambition but the talent to back it up.
Every time we get in the car my girlfriend tells me to put on the "deja vu" song by "that bartees guy"
