I need to sit with this. It’s really good, but the singles were my fav tracks so far on first listen. More mid tempo than I was expecting based on all the early reviews saying it’s more muscular/straightforward than Gold & Grey
Loving the prominence of Gina's backing vox. Slightly less squashed dynamics than the last couple records too, possibly?
Only a couple of tracks in but sounding very good so far. Liked but never loved (or even listened to much) the last two, but so far, this is promising.
Just finished my first listen and I think this is good. The flow is a bit odd, at first, but I think it really settles in nicely in the back half. Looking forward to spending more time with this.
idk if i like this. what the hell is john doing with his voice on beneath the rose and choir. it sounds like ... charlie daniels band lol last word and anodyne are cool
It pains me to say it but “Beneath the Rose” is legitimately awful I still think it’s a good record, the second half definitely is much better in particular. But it would have to really really grow on me for it not to be my least favorite by a lot
Listened to this record a few times, coming around on some of the weirder choices. I appreciate that it sounds mixed a lot better than the past few records EXCEPT for the vocals on Last Word, they sound so buried relative to every other song. Takes me out of it right at the start of the album.
I’ve come around to this in a big way. Still not as good as gold&grey, purple or yellow&green, but the weirder choices don’t bother me anymore.
Still waiting for this to click for me like it has for some of y’all…but regardless this is an awesome variant/packaging
