Finally saw it! Pretty good. I think my expectations were a little too high, the production design was fantastic and it was quite clever. Belongs in the same subversive capitalism category as The Lego Movie, I assume this “genre” will only get worse from here though.
It’s bad enough that the Oscars are meaningless as a gauge of quality. They also have to bring out the worst in the discourse. So excited for Barbie to join EEAAO in movies I loved but refuse to talk about because no one can be normal about them.
I still have not watched EEAAO partly out of my disgust for representation obsessed Asians and white people who like to do the most
One of the co-writers and co-directors is Hong Kong/Taiwanese. I don’t think there’s anything that fits under “representation obsessed” by making a film that acknowledges the faults he found in his household while growing up. Seems pretty standard for writers to examine and challenge their lived experiences.
I just watched EEAAO for the first time and waymond made me want to be a better person but then I didn't actually do anything to become as wholesome and nice as him. But for one evening he made me maybe believe I could sort of try to be!
It was a great watch in theaters, but I've never sat through it beginning-to-end at home, and I think it's much more enjoyable if taken in all at once.
