Man they are going to make so many "toy" movies that try to match the tone of this movie and fail unbearably annoyingly
watched this again for second time and got as many laughs and as many tugs at the heartstrings as first viewing. this thing is so well done
At times I thought this was funny, and I thought Robbie and Gosling were perfect. But man I kind of thought the script was a little bit of a muddled mess? I’m honestly not sure what the movie was trying to say about feminism at times, it seemed to be at odds with itself, and then also winking, idk. Or maybe the things it was trying to say we’ve already heard a bunch don’t didn’t hit as hard (as maybe it did for some people) I know there is a tightrope here, a very tricky movie to pull off. Maybe I just didn’t get it. Gosling had me rolling a few times though. anyone want to help me out here? it’s weird because any commentary on this movie feels like it will be received with a yea we’ve already heard or talked about that. So if you say well it’s still about a toy made by a corp that is a cog in the capitalist machine that instills a patriarchy and sells feminism back to women via a movie ticket, it’s a “yea well that’s what the movie is saying”. Idk. Help.
I think It had 2 main points. 1. It looks at the role Barbie played in feminism, its brand of empowerment and how it also created the pressure of expectations molded by a capitalistic system. 2. It aims to expose the continual existence and effects of patriarchy, by making observational jokes about the real world and subverting them in Barbie Land.
