Seeing a bunch of baby dolls get brutally smashed to pieces by weird mute kids… uh sure, fine I guess
It was an incredible trailer for the movie when it premiered by itself a few months ago. It wouldn't have hurt the movie if it didn't make the actual cut, but it felt spot on thematically as the actual intro.
It would have landed better if we hadn’t seen the entire scene in the first trailer, but it was still a clever way to start the movie. It winks at the whole cultural conversation that built around it the moment Gerwig signed on. It’s a big commercial IP but it’s got a well respected director. It’s a way of telling the audience, look we know it’s not 2001, but we’re gonna try. oh and it’s also just fucking funny
Everything about it is a 2001 reference. Have you seen that movie? It's a buildup of the cultural significance of Barbie and it's also very funny.
Outside of video games, I think Barbie has to be one of, if not *the* most politicized kids toy of the past century. The whole movie deals with Barbies being seen as these completely idealized perceptions of what “modern women” are supposed to be. The 2001 reference, in which Barbie stands in for the obelisk that brings about a new stage of human development, works perfectly to set up that idea from the jump
