This fucking rules. Might've shot up to be my favorite movie of the year so far. Feels super Raimi, also gives hints of Fulci at times, loved every second of it.

I haven’t seen anyone mention it yet but Justin Long wearing a Grillo’s pickles hat in this movie is just the icing on the cake

Justin Long was incredible in this lmao

Him throwing the macbook got a big laugh from me, and my gf I were cackling at him immediately viewing the dungeon as extra square footage for resell & throughout the entire measuring scene

Also, the long shot of him explaining what actually happened with him and the actress to his friend at the bar (who was for sure Cregger, right?) was incredibly chilling

Going for the triple post for some nitpicks, I agree with angel paste that the ”she’s not even the worst thing in there” line felt like foreshadowing to a *relatively* weak payoff. Like yeah Frank is awful - so awful that even the Mother fears him. But that line for sure implies to the audience that there’s a bigger threat on the horizon, when in reality Frank was just a decrepit pile of shit who was unable to do anything but die

I also don’t really get why the Mother didn’t just take Tess and/or Keith the first night? Like she was clearly roaming the house lol, I guess she just wanted to come upstairs to get a peek at them and then hope they went downstairs at some point? And how was she getting out of the basement at night if that door at the top of the stairs was always locked from the outside? Rhetorical questions since obviously the answer to these is “so the movie can happen”, but still

Definitely some minor things that didn't seem to really add all the way up for sure. Going back for round 2 tonight.

This movie is so fucking fun with a crowd. My stock in Zach Cregger from like 2007 is finally paying off?

Idk if I loved this because I spent so much of the movie with my hands on my temple trying to figure out what was going on

but I do want to see it again

That's actually how I watch movies too. And drive a car when I want the light to stay green.

This is the kinda movie that falls apart the second you start to think about any of the logistics, but who cares cause it’s so much fucking fun!

the shot of the mother swan diving off the water tower had me dying in the theater
The cinematography was phenomenal, way better then you’d expect out of something like this.

  16. Loved a lot of this and deeply hated a bunch of stuff in the final act. Definitely glad I saw it in a theater without even seeing a trailer though.

I saw this for the second time last night. I missed a bunch of things on first watch since I was so damn scared for the first half. I can't wait to see what else Cregger does in the future.

This was just ok, way toooo many plot holes. If you’re looking for a couple intense jump scares then yea, it’s serviceable.

Bill Skarsgard was such perfect casting for this. He's so effortlessly menacing and charming that I truly could not decide if he was going to be the villain or not until, well, you know.

I still haven't seen it, but idk if there's anything I might care less about than plot holes in a movie like this

Alright... so how scary is this and are there a lot of jump scares? I don't watch too many horror movies but this one has caught my eye with the reviews. Just a simple Scary x/10, number of jump scares x/10 kind of thing.

  22. The scariest parts of this were at least 8/10 scary for me, maybe more. One particular sequence was among the most effective I've ever seen in a movie. There were a couple jump scares but nothing I remember as really crazy.

It’s def scary, I’d agree 8/10, just don’t think too much into it.

There are maybe 2 or 3 actual jump scares? But a lot of disturbing shit.

There is one part in particular that really got to me - the buildup and anticipation of Tess going back down after Keith, the initial scare that is Keith crawling towards her, and then the resulting reveal of the mother and the headsmashingbut besides that, I'd say it's a few minor jump scares and overall disturbing content
