Bandcamp is joining Epic Games: I’m excited to announce that Bandcamp is joining Epic Games, who you may know as the makers of Fortnite and Unreal Engine, and champions for a fair and open Internet.Bandcamp will keep operating as a standalone marketplace and music community, and I will continue to lead our team. The products and services you depend on aren’t going anywhere, we’ll continue to build Bandcamp around our artists-first revenue model (where artists net an average of 82% of every sale), you’ll still have the same control over how you offer your music, Bandcamp Fridays will continue as planned, and the Daily will keep highlighting the diverse, amazing music on the site. I feel like it's easy to be skeptical, but the fact they've held out this long shows they're picky. Or maybe desperate. Either way, might as well see how it plays out before jumping the gun.
I don't know much about Epic, but I know people in the video game world fucking hate them. Somewhat nervous to see what happens with this.
Maybe tencent can hire some of them to do social media for some of their games considering they cannot seem to find any for whatever reason
As someone who works in M&A, I am incredibly curious as to what synergies/benefits they plan on generating by going with them. I can't even imagine how different their client bases must be.
I like bandcamp as a place to sample and buy music. I like how they artist friendly bandcamp days. Hope it continues as a user friendly site for artists/bands, fans and keeps their people.
Epic Games Acquires Bandcamp — Pixel Envy Compelling argument that they did this to try and further their anti-trust case against Apple. Making it even more eye rolling IMO.
Wow, Epic is really petty... Which doesn't help with my confidence when it comes to this merger. Hope I'm wrong, but I really could see this potentially hurting Bandcamp which would be a shame because I enjoy using the site to check out new groups.
