I say this as someone who loves this band dearly, and have only seen one other band more times live, but... I don't feel like they do themselves a lot of favors live. Not a ton of stage presence outside of Jon at times, the performances are fine but I don't think they really elevate the songs, and they make baffling setlist choices. They opened with Tiny Raindrop, Afterparty (baffling choice personally, one of my least favorite off LWM) then Any Means. Did not feel like they brought much energy to the stage at all. The setlist also doesn't have any songs with a slightly aggressive edge, and I'm not sure if that is tailoring to the audience since they're opening for Turnover, or if that's to save Jon's voice, but it's a little bit of a bummer. Zero songs from Separation. Highlights were definitely the new songs (Any Means, Restless, A Little of Myself, Cross to Bear) along with Postcard, which Jon really lets loose and vibes hard with, and I appreciate seeing someone really get into a performance like that.
I feel like they’ve been pretty good about setlists through their career, but agree that the sequencing on this tour is bizarre. On our stop they opened with Any Means > Tiny Raindrop > Restless. Just a strange stretch of songs. Felt like it took a while for them to get momentum
Perfect timing for a new Balance song/feature. We’re currently in false fall here and it’s 50 degrees this morning
All of B&C’s music released on Memory Music that I had downloaded to my phone from Apple Music is no longer available to play and grayed out. They’re available on Apple Music, and I can play the songs there, but I can’t add to library or download. Anyone ever experienced this? Is it a weird licensing issue? Edit: Assuming it is something with Memory Music because New Preoccupations by Caracara is grayed out too. Edit 2: The songs will download after I delete the previous "version" from my phone. So annoying.
revisited this on my night home and it truly is something special. i can see myself like it more than TTWTAM with time. it's so damn concise. book end to book end of quality music. every single track is incredible.
I put Light We Made on yesterday and idk what it was but that album finally clicked with me and now I love it BIG TIME. What an underrated record thanks to fools like me when it first came out.
It's so much easier to stomach the release knowing: 1. It wasn't their final release, and 2. They course corrected with WYIS, and it was very good This happens a lot, but when a band releases an album that is a little too experimental for a lot of fans, it usually gets better acceptance after a follow up is generally well received and goes a little more back to what the band is conventionally good at.
I'm extremely biased cause they're a top 5 band to me, but I think they have a perfect discography. I can see why people didn't like Light We Made when it was released, but I think it's aged well too.
LWM was my first Balance record. i spun it once before seeing them headline a show back at the end of that album cycle (i was mainly going because From Indian Lakes was an opener), and fell in love with it. seeing them play it live later that night made me obsessed.
there are days where i feel like lwm is their best record. especially with those slow heart songs tacked on
The only critique I have is the production on TTWTWM and which tracks are on the original tracklisting for LWM and which ones were b-sides. I want TTWTWM to lean just slightly cleaner, it's just a little exhausting to listen to front to back. That was a problem with a lot of Yip releases at that time. It does well for atmosphere and vocals sitting even with the rest of the instruments and not overpowering, but the higher drum frequencies cut through just a little too much in that style of "wall of sound" production. There's a version of LWM where I take off my 3 least favorite and add in all three b-sides and it makes for a much more pleasant listening experience for me personally.
I really don’t like Light We Made but I haven’t revisited since it released, you all make me want to give it another spin.
I loved both comeback singles, but the WYIS did nothing for me. Light We Made was hit or miss, but the hits go hard.
Someone on this website once described it as the horniest song they’ve ever heard and now that’s all I can think of when I listen to it lol
