I feel like the ‘70s had it right. Bands who did gatefold usually were making really ambitious projects or put a lot of work into album art or gave you such detailed credits that it was a huge bonus. It really doesn’t need to be a default.

It’s also just too expensive now. Here new release are like between €30 and €40 mostly now.

Right, like, I'm not mad that Born to Run is a gatefold haha. But I think that's probably part of the issue, because a part of me is always thinking "Well, I don't mind if it's a single LP with a gatefold if it's a really 'important' album, or an album I really love." But how do you tell an artist that their album isn't important enough or good enough to get a gatefold?

I hesitate to even say it, but that may have been one benefit of labels

My vinyl purchasing has went way down over the last few years. There are other factors but the biggest is for cost. When I lived in Phoenix I would visit Zia like once a month and peruse the aisles and walk out spending $60-$70. Last time I did that at Shake It I walked out spending $140 for roughly the same amount of records.

Now I reserve my vinyl purchases for sales, holy grails or pre-orders for my favorite artists.

when I saw the news about Turnstile's new guitarist I thought "whoa! weird career pivot but maybe they'll finally be good" only to realize I had the wrong meg in mind

they seem to be very aware of the fact that glow on tapped into the culture. good for them, they’re savvy business people.

rather than pushing the envelope musically, i suspect they are just sticking to the exact same formula sonically and spent more time with marketing thinking about cute ways to capitalize on their target customer’s compulsive need to have the rarest / special pressing.

to me it reeks of sellout behavior. just make good music, press your record on 100g black, and tour.

you sound 100 years old, they did different variants for the last album, so has every band ever since vinyl has become cool again. you’re also judging a 14 track album off of one song. saying sellout in 2025 just gets an eye roll from me. are you one of the people that don’t think they’re “real” hardcore or whatever?

they’re a merch company who happens to record music and tour. the genre crap means nothing to me. stanning for merchcore is weirdo behavior.

I wouldn't single them out for their merchandising, which is rampant across the industry. I will however happily single them out for their music, which does nothing for me whatsoever

every even remotely big hardcore band has several merch designs. If it bothers you so much definitely don’t check out Fiddlehead’s online store

had to tie dye a couple white fiddlehead shirts they printed on gildans cause the pits started to yellow after literally one wear.

Ok. My point is you don’t have an issue with bands being “merchcore” when they make music you like, so we can probably wrap this up.
