He's always an interesting writer and I'd prefer he make a list from his own quirks and taste than just try to do a basic-ass consensus picks list, tbh.

I feel like he's drowning in snark 75 percent of the time nowadays and it's dulled his edge as a critic. He used to be one of my go-to guys, but I find him mostly insufferable now.

That's totally fair. I still mostly enjoy him because I feel like I know the exact measure handful of salt to take him with, but I get being annoyed.

Hyden is good generally but that list is pretty bad. Lots of bands where I can’t fathom the album picked (Waxahatchee and Gecs the most egregious on quick glance), bands that baaarely belong (White Stripes and Lana) and I can’t imagine not having BSS on a list with a 2000 cutoff. YHF is goated though and I have to tip my cap to the Constantines and Lisbon by the Walkman both being there.

Making lists like this with one writer is truly nothing more than clickbait, unless it happens to be some kind of widely agreed on authority

they’re not like, completely inappropriate to include but it feels a little bit like the rock version of including blink 182 on a list like this

Indie rock is such a nebulous term anyway, no one was ever gonna be happy with a list like this

Kind of a weird thing to say. Blink-182 wouldn't be considered indie rock in the slightest, whereas White Stripes were very much part of the explosion of that whole scene in the 00s. It's like saying it makes no sense to include Modest Mouse or Death Cab For Cutie.

I actually feel like lists by individuals are inherently more interesting because you get more unusual or left-of-center selections. Big lists decided by lots of people often have the same consensus picks.

Collecting vinyl was a lot more fun when there wasn’t an expectation that everything had to be repressed or made widely available. Having rare things is cool and hunting through the bin at a record store or saving up a little bit of cash for that grail record on Discogs was so pure and legitimately rewarding. There was always an aspect of consumerism to it but it feels like that’s all it is anymore

honestly it's just the price hike from seemingly every label and band these days (really post-lockdown) that has kind of soured me on the hobby. i went to my local shop to pick up deafheaven this weekend and it seemed like everything was $35-40, oftentimes for a non-gatefold record too

was pleasantly surprised the MJ Lenderman record was like $22

My vinyl hot take is that not everything has to be a gatefold and artists with single-LP releases should in fact not do a gatefold. Save some materials waste and conserve some space on my shelf.

Yeah I have probably bought as many records from like 2018 to now as I did in an average year from 2010 to 2018. Once an average record crossed the $30 barrier it started to feel a little stupid. I’ve been getting back into it and trying to snag a couple of my top 5 from every recent year, but the amount of single albums I see for $40+ is gross. It costs legitimately under $10 a copy to do do full color sleeve and insert and lacquer pressings and get them shipped to your door at 250 copies, they simply do not need to cost even close to what they do at the economy of scale the average release is pressed at today.

  25. I think most new releases I’m buying, provided they’re a single LP, are generally between $23-$26. But yeah I really miss the days when that looked more like $16-$20. I remember buying the 10 year Futures back in 2015 and feeling like I was dropping that big coin at the merch booth with my $35. That’s like lower than minimum for a 2xLP anymore
