I think it's kind of fun to wear homemade merch or clever Etsy-type stuff at shows, but I don't usually do official band merch.

most official band merch is so bad these days. but i wouldn’t wear a band’s bootleg stuff to a show either. again, who are you signaling to? everyone there also likes the band that you are all paying to see

I don't think it's really "signaling" to anyone. Like, dressing up in homemade stuff for the Eras Tour was fun because it was part of the experience of going to that show with friends, not because I needed people in the stadium to know that I, too, liked Taylor Swift.

yeah eras tour is a fair exception

but it is signaling something. otherwise why not just wear a blank t shirt lol? you are saying “hey i like the artist on this shirt” if you are wearing a band/music tee

The sports thing definitely came to mind, lol, though I’m largely not into sports so idk. But, it does feel silly to me to say the sport thing is cool ‘cause it’s competition, but the merch thing as a celebration is bad.

I also thought about the Taylor Swift thing, and Charli’s brat tour, and Beyoncé. Seems like a certain level of spectacle makes it make more sense, versus say… just wearing a Thrice graphic tee in casual clothes while attending a show where Thrice is playing.

The other similar idea that came to mind is some nerd culture shit, which can range from just some modest pop culture merch to some absolutely impressive cosplay.

when beyoncé came here, the foot traffic was insane, and i saw very little, like, beyonce merch. it was all stuff like people trying to match outfits beyonce would wear on stage. the most extravagantly dressed concert attendees i’ve seen.

It is kind of crazy how bad so many big bands (i.e. older legacy bands usually) are with official merch. Just run your vintage designs and print your own money.

    Why wear clothes at all?

  11. Wore a Thursday shirt to the Thursday show 15 years ago and a girl yelled at me from across the parking lot within seconds of me getting out of my car. She told me I lost scene points, which I'm pretty sure I've never recovered. Still in the red.

I do think the “signal” angle is interesting, even if I don’t 100% agree with it per se. I think that’s part of why, like I said earlier, I find it more fun most of the time to pick an unrelated tee that I think will relate and/or contrast in a way that makes sense to my brain, lol.

But, I think for the people who don’t know some think it’s corny and do it… it’s just as simple as being like, “I like this thing, and I want to, in however small a way, lean into my enjoyment of said thing at this event.”

I like showing off that I have way too many band shirts so I can coordinate them to concerts

I deduct 10,000 scene points from @Albe for being extremely annoying.

The worst kind of bad poster is the kind that just floods a thread with posts that are antagonistic in a shallow, empty way, and then responds with glee when someone is finally like, “hey, you’re being a bit annoying!”
