RHCP truly have become a joke band at this point, anytime I hear one of their recent songs (see: last 10+ years) it just sounds like a SNL skit parodying Kiedis

I liked Unlimited Love a lot. Never spent a ton of time with the other one for some reason. Maybe I’d just reached my RHCP quota for that year, lol

I actually agree that By the Way is their best album if that's what the deleted post said

Among their other crimes, always bugged me that I'd heard that "By the Way" verse chord progeression somewhere before...

Growing up, By the Way was always my favorite by a fair margin. That was a piping hot take 20 years ago. Less so now, it seems!

Bringing this to the appropriate thread so as not to derail the Accountability thread.

Do people really have bizarre rules like this for making playlists? Or was this just a joke?

when I made mix CDs and tapes back in high school I definitely swiped the "don't open with an opener or close with a closer" rule from.... somewhere? to my mind streaming playlists don't have as much meaning - if only because there's generally significantly less labour involved - so it feels weird(er) to apply rules to those.

I don't remember any such rule, but I also didn't really spend time making mix CDs. My tastes & knowledge were still too limited when that was still a thing, for the most part.

Is it a thing where people want their mix CDs to work perfectly on shuffle? If so, that makes sense. But also, making a mix or playlist or whatever with a clear opening and closer and general flow is rad.

Oh, and I see that the conversation that came from included the classic "don't listen to the band you're going to see." I've heard that so much, but imo that's silly. Who cares. If I'm with someone who feels that way, in an "I don't wanna overplay the music," then I'm not an asshole about it, but I also have done it and had a good time, lol.

Feel like some of that can feel a bit too insecure about "coolness" and liking things. Goes hand in hand with the whole "wearing the merch of whoever you're seeing" thing (which I normally don't do because pairing an unrelated shirt to the event is fun to me, but also... who cares).

Damn, I make a playlist of the setlist before going to the show. Am I the bad guy?

The "not listening to the band on the way to the show" rule is stupid. Pre-gaming a show in that way can be fun and is a great way to get yourself amped up. I've never, ever left a show thinking "Man, I really spoiled that for myself by listening to the songs in the car beforehand!"

I do often adhere to the "don't start a mix with an opener or end it with a closer" guideline, though. That's a fun way to recontextualize songs and come at them from different angles.

I understand people not necessarily opening with an opener, cause I've done it myself when I've made some playlists.

I do listen for songs that have an opener "feel", but that might not necessarily be an actual opener.

I just think anytime you take a personal preference and make it a "rule" is when you need to go touch some grass.

Hm, interesting. I still don’t like it as a “rule,” but also, I am a fan of recontextualizing shit. So, doing it as sort of a challenge sounds fun.

Listening to a band on the way to their show is fine. Wearing their shirt to the show is corny.

  18. I don't listen to the jam band on the way to the jam band show because if it's a bad show I don't wanna be thinking about the good show I was listening to on the way the whole time

Yeah, like I said, for me it’s more of a guideline. It’s a fun challenge to pick a not as obvious song to start or end a mix. That said, sometimes, an album opener is just so obviously the starting point for whatever I’m going for that I dispense with the strategy. That happens pretty frequently with my annual summer mix.

  21. it depends. if it's a mass produced shirt that isn't rare or representing some kind of deep cut band lore it feels like you just bought it at the show even if its not being sold. for me i'd rather wear something else just because everyone there already knows I like the band we're seeing

everyone is there to see them. it is presumed you like them already since you are paying money to see them.

the only exception to this are jam band bands

The above 2 posts cover it. And people compare it to sporting events but there are 2 teams competing at sporting events so you wear stuff of the team you want to win.

Concerts should be a competition between all the bands at the show, and whoever gives the best performance is the winner, and we behead the loser.
