I’ve lost a lot of the hater inside me, but Catatonic Youth posted an AJR song today that was so viscerally bad I had to listen to the album it was on and it was some of the worst shit I’ve ever heard. I might dislike them more than any band I can bring to mind

I’ve found “coworker music” to be a dumb buzzwordy descriptor of music, but this fits the bill. Then I checked their IG and saw that my coworker who is also in a megachurch follows them. Nail on the head descriptor of who I think digs this shit.

 

I've heard one or two of their songs maybe and they're bad bad bad

 

I have the weirdest short term memory with that band lol - any time I see them mentioned, which I guess really is not that often, I struggle to figure out the acronym. Then I wind up googling and remembering that’s just the name of the group. Don’t think I’ve ever heard a song by them

They have a song on the album I listened to (their debut) where they half-assed shit on pitchfork, and the next song is called “Woody Allen” and it’s about feeling so good that you feel like Woody Allen

 

It's like if Weezer and 21 Pilots got together and made something ten times worse, which makes sense because their only good song is written by Rivers

I’ve seen them live twice lol. The first time opening for Ingrid Michaelson and it was pouring and we missed most of their set. The second after a Phillies game when I was trashed.

I searched AJR in my texts and found some of me shitting on them dating back to 2018, so I guess I’ve been a long term hater.

I don’t, but I just opened their feed and have 76 mutuals that follow them lol. Apparently I’ve been missing out!

 

This has big 2011 viral internet content energy both musically and visually. Not complimentary or derogatory, but this feels like it's a relic of the past even though it came out four years ago lol

 

AJR is brutal. I sometimes listen to radio still and it’s like the worst kind of radio music.

 

I will moderately defend that album as one of the few nu metal era ones worth saving, but fucking lol at it in that company.

 

Those R&B albums are good, some even timeless classics, but the fact that there are people that think that this collection represents R&B is why R&B sucks now

 

I’m just fascinated by the thought process that led someone to group Fallen in with those other three albums.

 

Also, count me in for the AJR hate train. I also saw them open for Ingrid Michaelson once, and it was, bar none, the most annoying opening set I’ve ever sat through. The songs are obnoxious on their own, but the fact that the main guy never takes off that stupid fucking hat somehow makes the whole enterprise like 50 times worse.
