This review ran yesterday, but I just saw it today. 3.7 for Benson Boone from Pitchfork: Benson Boone: American Heart

Among other shots, this review calls Boone "an invasive species in the garden of good taste" and "a step removed from the genuine article: music for people who like how music sounds, but not for people who like music," and even burns a paragraph talking about the TikTok generation's version of showmanship. Ouch!

(I have not listened to this album.)

My bad take will always be that bionic is a goated Christina Aguilera album. Y'all slept on it, hated on it and it was the incorrect take. And I love that Christina clearly loves the album despite it flopping it because she played so many album cuts from it when I saw her and it gave me so much life. Now, lotus, we don't talk about and I'm pretty sure Christina doesn't talk about either. The good sis has been uninspired for years but we deserve it for letting bionic flop

And the Gaga comparisons were totally off base and lazy because nothing on that album screams Gaga to me besides us needing to pit two pop girlies

God damn. I enjoyed his SNL performance. May still give the album a shot.

That's the second most vicious line I've seen this year next to the pull-quote from P4k's Tha Carter VI review:

"Seemingly written and recorded in a very expensive vacuum, the sixth chapter of Wayne’s legacy-making album series would be a disaster, if it mattered at all."

Edit: I actually think the detour on TikTok showmanship is pretty spot-on. Also I'll give credit for using "jejune" and making it feel relatively natural.

I have absolutely no opinion on him. I've definitely heard his big hit more than a few times, but it's the kind of song that doesn't really move the needle for me in either direction.

Also, woof, that Lil Wayne burn. Savage.

I have to listen to the radio for work sometimes and if I have to hear "PLEEEEASE! STAAAY!" Or "I take my whiskey neeEEeaaat" one more time I will lay down and die dead.

I worked out front at Home Depot one summer during college and it felt like every single time I walked in the store Rumor Has It by Adele was on. I hate that song to this day.

I control the music at the place I volunteer at and I put like way too much thought into being a dj, trying to capture the vibe and clients and weather, incorporating songs I know other volunteers and clients enjoy. When someone compliments the music I live for it. The other day the boss was so excited about the playlist she had made because she'd never made one before and her excitement was so cute I was like yes girl go off. She basically just played the top 40 hits from like 2018-present. Which is totally fine. But then another volunteer was like "oh man who's controlling the music cause this is a vibe!!" and I was like OMG WE MAY AS WELL JUST BE LISTENING TO THE RADIO. WHAT I DO IS AN ART FORM. ART!!!

That is legitimately one of the worst radio songs ever released

If “Rumor Has It” is your bar for bad radio songs, you haven’t heard very many radio songs.

I don't think that's what they meant. If you've ever been forced to listen to a song day in and day out for an extended period of time, it'll start to sour on you, no matter what the song.

I think “Rumor Has It” has a chorus that would grow old upon forced repeated listens faster than most others.

Thankfully no. I corralled carts, helped people load stuff into their cars, and watered the plants in the garden center. Also had to alert a manager whenever contractors that were notorious for stealing shit showed up lol.

Rumor has it is another good example of artist songs seemingly being generated in a lab irrespective of who’d be playing it. That song didn’t need to get old, it felt confused on first listen.

I did not know people disliked that song so much. I’ve always enjoyed it. And it feels very much in line with the other upbeat songs from that Adele album to me: retro soul-pop with big, booming modern production. No more “generated in a lab” than “Rolling in the Deep.”
