I enjoy her, but far from love. My biggest turn off is that every single line feels like it's written for a potential tiktok trend. I am not opposed to tongue in cheek lyrics, but it's kinda exhausting when every single line sounds like it comes with a big wink to the camera

I like her mostly, but I agree Steve. So much of what she does feels calculated. I know all pop is calculated, but it's not supposed to feel like it. I also think the raunchiness feels like a put-on.

Well I'll finish my bad opinion with i think all of that is fluff thats "necessary" since her songs DON'T speak for themselves. Like if they didn't have her do all of that the i dont think she'd be as relevant as she is.

The songs aren't THAT good so let's make her VERY SILLY and VERY SEXUAL INNUENDO to cover it up

  4. I'm mostly annoyed that the material that is finally connecting with the GP isn't really for me, neither the newer persona that I find to be a bit corny and one note, and that she disowned most of her discography at the same time. There were some Ariana like gems in her pre-breakout albums.

The only Sabrina Carpenter thing I enjoy.

I just think poptimism made everyone forget that stuff can be well crafted and performed by professionals and catchy but still, fundamentally, wack

I like Sabrina Carpenter because she’s deeply unserious & a good entertainer, and her songs are generally catchy fun.

I understand her thing not being for everyone. There are other silly celebrities I find obnoxious. But, I do think it’s an outright incorrect opinion to say her nonsense is a put-on; she definitely seems like someone who would make those dumb jokes and innuendos in conversation if she weren’t a singer.

I agree with this but idk that I think Sabrina is the right example. Some of those songs are legitimately really good songs

Feel like I should add that I genuinely enjoy Short n' Sweet. Just not the the levels of messianic praise she gets broadly, is all.

I like Sabrina but I'm not a fan of her aesthetic even tho I think it's helped her get so big.

I definitely understand the "everything is calibrated for TikTok" complaint with Sabrina, but I don't think that's just her. I felt like a ton of the last Taylor Swift album was written with the same thing in mind. Just seems like something you're going to encounter these days when TikTok is a huge part of buzz building in pop music.

That’s an issue I have with Olivia Rodrigo’s music as well. Every single I’ve heard feels very calculated and inorganic, like it’s music made for TikTok and IG reels

I genuinely do not understand most of how “inorganic” and “calculated” is being used here, lol.

I think we should get back to writing music because we like writing music and not for an algorithm on an app and catering to a specific audience but that's just me

Guilty of this too but it's low key misogynistic

It definitely seems like this kind of criticism is levied more often at female artists. Then again, there are arguably no A-list male pop stars in the game right now other than Morgan Wallen, and his whole thing is calculated for mass streaming consumption.

    this is all there is

pop country is definitely as calculated as music gets right now, probably. I got subjected to a few songs on the radio the other day and it really does sound like AI generated bullshit that I can't believe anyone takes seriously (I know this is not an original opinion, just reaffirming it).

The last Jonas Brothers album was the most made-for-tiktok album I've ever heard, some of the songs didn't even have structure, just a collection of disconnected parts, hoping one would catch on

Sabrina is fine. The songs are well made but basically candy, empty calories. I don’t find a whole lot more past the surface. Every pop star/public figure’s persona is to some extent calculated, the most interesting/resonant of them find a way to either embrace it fully or make it feel invisible.

The only reason I said it about Carpenter is because she was who was being discussed. I could easily say the same thing for any bottom barrel, dime a dozen, pandering, lyrically lazy artists that are on the top 40 list. Especially as someone pointed out pop country. I was in a Texas Roadhouse and they were playing music videos on their TVs and there was just so much junk on there that were basically the same songs.

They're all feeding an algorithm and an audience just in different ways. Carpenter has sex appeal so it leans into that, at least in the marketing and 20% of her songs. Drake is steered to people with absolute no morals. Alex Warren is for the new gen who were raised on Tiktok. Etcetera, etcetera.

I get it. It's part of business and people need to make a living to be able to continue being artists. But at a certain point it just feels so hollow and less interesting.
