    forbidden chalice.

fair enough!! i swear people +/- my age use it but it could be a byproduct of being very online. to be perfectly fair, i would never use the terminology unless i was absolutely certain the person i’m speaking to would be receptive of it

I'm an English teacher, I am all for language evolving and shifting and changing. I am constantly poking and prodding at my students as to why they are using the language that they are using. For instance, we're reading "The Body" (Stand By Me) and Gordie describes Chris as "tough" enough to be sensitive. One of my kids said that was "glazing". I said it was dumb that he was being homophobic about a character complimenting his friend, and that started a classwide argument about what "glazing" means. They don't even think about the language they are using/why it means what it means, they just say it because other people do. I'm fine with them using new language as long as they're aware of the meaning/connotation behind it.

I'm more arguing that A. "Mid" is being misused and B. I think too many old people are using kids' slang in a way that is dorky or forced. The "online" aspect annoys me as well. I agree with the above post, I think it's corny to speak online in a way that you would not speak in real life.

I discourage and avoid sus because the way my students use it sometimes verges on homophobia, and alpha/beta because it's toxic manosphere shit.

    "Brain rot" amuses me.

I don’t use brain rot but it is a very accurate term

Yeah, I think "mid" is bothersome in music discourse because it can mean anything from "fucking awful" to "meh/boring" to "this is fine, but not spectacular."

One of my crank-ier opinions is that I get annoyed by excessive use of “Twitter-speak”, especially used in real life or in written work. Feel like a lot of the terms mentioned fall under that umbrella.

    hmmm

‘Mid’ is such a throwaway term that it almost invariably judges the very person who deploys it.

Mid is context dependent, you read the meaning based on who you’re talking to and what they’re talking about. “Meh” is the only term brought up in these pages that I actively hate and it’s mostly because of annoying millennials using it to be condescendingly dismissive.

I don't want to be a dick, but is all this really worth having a hang up about? I don't judge people by their words unless they're actively being offensive. I might think some slang is silly, but I don't really care about it at all.

Meh is not really slang though is it, I feel like that’s a sound cavemen made when the hunt was mediocre

Penlab buddy I feel like you're in the wrong threads if you just keep repeating "why do people care about this dumb shit"

I would perhaps argue that it’s preferable to have opinions, so that you can also have tastes, personality, etc.

    Idk, just my opinion!

Listen, I get it, it's the bad opinions thread, but I'm just making sure they know that I agree, it is a terrible opinion. I'm offering confirmation.
