this would make sense if everyone who was a fan of pop music pre poptimism wasn't called a slur by a trump supporter
It’s a valid point though. Like why are people here so afraid of a little alt-reggaeton. Gringo city over here
Related take: I think the original Reggaeton breakthrough in the 00s was way more interesting because that was some raw shit, this new-ish stuff is usually way more palatable
For sure. Love that early millennium sound (for not only reggaeton but a lot of dance music in general). Bet you that’s why some artists today are harkening back to that sound as if it were vintage
Polka dot band is one of the worst bands going and one of the only bands I’d fully buy as an industry plant, as much as that phrase likes to get thrown around them and President
The only place anyone talks about them is on Bluesky and music forums. They are a harmless instrumental group
Eh. If by “liking wack shit” you mean “exclusively liking wack shit,” then sure. It’s conservative and reactionary to be stagnant and bland across the board, with no side that’s curious or whatever. People contain multitudes, though. Or, at least they should. Being content with only slop isn’t the same as being able to appreciate certain things on their own terms (while still being well rounded in other ways).
Do you only believe a hook exists if there are vocals present? I don’t love Angine or anything but some of those melodies have been lodged into my brain for stretches of time throughout this year
I totally understand where you're coming from, and I definitely don't disagree that virtually everyone could be more adventurous in their listening. But I think what you're ultimately railing against is a critical mass issue. The "old, washed-up artists" you're shitting on there, and other bands of their ilk, are the shared reference points for much of the community. Chorus has evolved a lot over the years, but the roots are still what they are. It makes sense that those bands get a lot more discussion than something more obscure, or something in a totally different genre galaxy, because there's a much bigger awareness and history with them among the membership here. That's not to say there aren't opportunities to push people out of their comfort zones. I felt like I had a lot of success getting people to talk more about country music on here a decade ago when I was getting really into that genre. Stumping for stuff you love repeatedly can definitely have an effect. But there are also a lot of albums/artists I love that I don't expect will ever get super active threads on here, because there just aren't a critical mass of users who care about them, or even know they exist.
Angine are like fine, they don't too much for me but also their visual aesthetic is extremely grating to me so they have an uphill battle. I think about 75% of it is the floppy nose, the polka dots don't even bother me that much. They're playing gizzfest this summer so I will probably see them but maybe I'll try to do something else while everyone is being french. I basically agree with Ooty though. People can listen to whatever obviously but I do not get listening to an album for the literal one thousandth time in your life where are there are one thousand albums out this year that I would like but will probably never hear even as I try my best to look. Listen to On The Corner
I don’t! EITS and caspian have tons of hooks. Come together is almost entirely based of the bass hook. I just don’t hear it in that band
I guess I just miss a lot of the users on here that would constantly push me or challenge my thinking when it came to music/film. Still a handful on here but I think that element of conversation has really gone away
