Lolz it’s a bad opinions thread—aren’t I supposed to come in guns blazing? i stand by my point tho. this started as a pop-punk site but folks are in their 30s-50s posting about those same bands. peoples’ tastes can change—and they probably should Also disagree—Angine de Poitrine are pretty solid, but that’s still a math rock band! That still fits the chorus.fm theme. If that’s your only point of reference for international shit then you need to keep digging!
The site is so much better than the AP days in terms of curiosity and discussion of hiphop/pop/r&b, but it also lost a core group of inquisitive, intelligent posters over time
My bad opinion is that Angine De Poitrine do not make music that is pleasing to my ears, and it seems like a lot of fans are in it to seem smarter than the average music listener. Every now and again a song will get me nodding my head, or humming or something, but for the most part it's really kind of grating and unpleasant to listen to. But I will also accept that when they stick around that they're just not for me and whatever to those that like them. But the cynic in me right now is like 'people actually like this?'
I certainly don’t care about bands like Saves the Day or Thrice anymore, but this particular grievance kind of feels like walking into a Big Lots and getting upset that they don’t sell any Wagyu beef
Eh, there was definitely more variety of discussion around film and music back in the day, even if it was only 10-15 users on the site
I try to eat vegetarian no but really my issue is that I believe the site can be more than a pop-punk forum. it’s disheartening to try and share offbeat stuff to an uncurious audience. I don’t want to leave the site but occasionally I feel I don’t belong anymore.
different factors involved, but I think you could also point to the fact that a lot of of us still here from the AP days are just older now. Less time to dick around on forums when you’re in your mid 30s opposed to your early 20s
Consider the infinitesimally small possibility that those threads may be as inactive as they are because the folks that populate them evidently harbor a breathtakingly condescending attitude toward the users they purport to want to have discussions with
On the one hand, I do understand how disheartening it can be to try to share stuff outside the vibe of the forum. It took two tries to get a post-grunge thread going unironically, because only a handful of us actually care about those kinds of bands, and I think that's okay for everything to have its time and place. And then again, some threads tug of war sometimes between people very excitedly discussing something and people very fervently trashing it, and it's hard to feel good if you're just here to unwind and talk to like-minded individuals. I'm not sure what the answer is. I think I'm mostly happy here for the people I'm conversing with, and that's enough for me, but I also understand feeling erstwhile if you don't think you're getting what you need.
they use microtonal tuning which gives them that angular, "grating" quality. some listeners enjoy that dissonant, jarring stuff which isn't immediately "pleasing to the ears," because they're actively seeking out challenging music. I for one like to have my expectations flipped. it's fun to listen to music that's focused on texture and/or polyrhythm over melody, sometimes because it's like brain-exercise or just because it's fascinating to experience what else music can do. it's not always meant to induce a "pleasant" sensation. even the most avant art deserves to be appreciated
I’ve honestly gotten more comfortable and less adventurous in my musical tastes as I’ve gotten older. When IWasaCamera (Vinh was it?) was around on AP.net, I’d have fun jumping into those threads and dabbling around. And I even somehow snuck into contributing to that blog they had a little bit, lol. But, I don’t really feel like exploring as often these days. Maybe I’ll cycle back around eventually into wanting to try different things. I do think some level of curiosity makes life better. But also, I’m pretty content with the role music currently plays in my life.
KGLW uses microtonal tunings even more but writes actual hooks too. Helpful thing for a band writing music to consider.
My bad take is that I’m like 40% convinced that poptimism is like partly to blame for Trump etc because we just started to let it slide that people aren’t ashamed of liking wack shit I’m sorry
The fact that the thread on Bad Bunny’s last album, an album that has been universally praised both critically and commercially, barely has 3 (I think) pages yet Taylor Swifts album, an album that has been nearly universally panned both critically and commercially, has (I assume) a hundred pages is criminal. CRIMINAL.
