They are a band I'd expect you to enjoy, particularly American Candy and forward, so I'll be interested to get your thoughts on those albums.
The Maine has two albums I LOVE but they're not the ones this site likes (Pioneer and Forever Halloween are mine)... everything else is okay for me but don't come close to those albums
I'll probably have to just let it die after this, and I'll still check out LLL again, but American Candy is not exciting me much at all. I guess I just don't get it, this album reminds me of a watered down Young The Giant at a lot of times and I'm not sure what there is to grab onto, song structures are all staightforward, lyrics aren't interesting me, I still think his voice is pretty grating... but I guess a lot of that is personal preference. The riff of "English Girls" absolutely sounds like Semi-Charmed Life, but I guess I just don't think of 3eb as that song as a whole, maybe I'm too big of a fan, but what 3eb does seems leagues above what I am hearing here. Anyway, I know no one is changing their mind, but my bottom line here is that simply, I don't get it
Yeah, you know what, this IS a good album. In retrospect, it's kinda ironic that I gave up on the band at American Candy and never went further. "Lost in Nostalgia" is damn cool too. Well shit, guess I might be into late-career The Maine now
That is definitely their best album, and was the one I was thinking of when I said they were a band I'd expect you to enjoy.
LOL I JUST went to look at that round and my comment too hgahaha Maybe it's the context of the album, maybe it's after I have binged all their albums and been underwhelmed until this moment, or maybe it's because I thought I knew that song when I was listening and only half-paid attention I owe you an apology but not a point still part of the scene
turns out I thought I had listened to this album before and was the last thing I heard from them, but after listening to it right now, and looking at my last.fm, I have never heard it til now so I was wrong!
I've only listened to their albums from LLL onward but I like all of those. You Are OK is my favourite.
@trevorshmevor I know you aren't in it, but I just opened the (regular) music league playlist for this week, and Do You Remember is on the playlist ha
I had a weird trajectory with them. Saw them open a few shows in 2009, in support of their first album. I thought they were a solid-enough neon pop-punk band, but not something I was super interested in at the time. I really dug their second album, Black & White, as a right-down-the-middle summer pop-rock album, even though that might now be the least beloved album in their catalog. Then I checked out until American Candy, which I liked but didn't love in the moment. Lovely Little Lonely was the one that got me to invest all the way, and would be an album of the decade contender for me if I were to re-rank the 2010s now. They've been one of my 4-5 favorite active bands since then.
I was actually working at Fearless, interning, when the EP was released so I was very familar with that and then the following album, felt the same, solid neon pop-punk and enjoyable, and then as I followed album by album I just never thought what they were evolving into was very compelling. Gonna give LLL some more listens then eventually check out further. I honestly did NOT expect this to be the outcome hahahah
In all sincerity, I'm curious what you'll think of their subsequent albums. I think most fans would say they leveled up with American Candy and Lovely Little Lonely and have been really solid ever since.
