Was reading a really good oral history of Crooked Rain Crooked Rain and one of the members said Pavement never agreed upon or even chose a set list before they played. They would usually have a drunken/stoned jam.
I’m sharing this because what I wouldn’t give to travel back in time and see Pavement be a jam band in the 90’s. I would die happy

Guster kind of lost me with their last few albums, but they were great in the ‘90s and 2000s. Lost and Gone Forever and Keep It Together are especially strong.

All three Julien Baker full lengths rule. Her transition into full band rules. People who love any one of her albums and dislike any other one honestly baffle me, lol, but no accounting for taste, etc.

Idk, I think Julien is pretty weak with melody, which is less of a glaring problem for me in sparser modes and more noticeable when there's a full band pulling focus from her lyrics and her voice. Really do not like Little Oblivions in the slightest, but still think Sprained Ankle is pretty great. I'm hit or miss on Turn Out the Lights, but there's some great stuff on there.

I’m surprised having a weaker melody means wanting less instrumentation accompanying that melody.

Her first album is all vibes, poetry, and emotion to me. It left a mark without necessarily having super melodically distinct songs. Her second fleshes those things out a bit musically without losing the core of what made her special. Her third, I feel like you lose all that special intimacy amidst the full-band arrangements. It would be one thing if the band was really good or doing interesting things musically, but I don't personally think that's the case!

again, if her boygenius songs are any indication, the next julien record is gonna ruin all of our lives

Hm. As often happens, I do not at feel the same way as you on this, lol. But I certainly see where you’re coming from.

Regardless, this motivated me to download some Julien Baker for offline play at work today, so that’s a win for me! (Unless listening to her brings out too many sad vibes! But I think my mental health is in a place at the moment for that not to be a thing!!!)

i like all three of her records but i think she’s about to make a big leap that the other two can’t

i don’t love her solo records but her songs with this project have insane melodies, which are partially why they’re usually the best songs lol

Little oblivions is excellent and I’m always confused why so many people seem so cool on it. Turn out the lights is an awkward half step with some gold on it. Obviously sprained ankle rules. Her boygenius songs are the only boygenius songs I ever return to unfortunately

Guster's new stuff is so radically different from where they started. People just gave up on them after a while which is a shame.

These two songs from their album Look Alive are so different but are really interesting and good.

For the niche - more death metal bands need to sound like Arghoslent. It fucking sucks the dudes are racists though.
