If I'm understanding your point correctly, I agree that my main issue with a lot of modern pop-punk/emo bands is just meandering melodies and song structures without a solid hook

 

I think Oso Oso is a major exception to the rule but overall I agree.

 

Yeah I feel like that’s the main reason I haven’t been truly wowed by an emo record since the mid 2010’s.

 

It’s what hooked me on that Jail Socks record in 2021 because they were particularly good at it. But then it turned out one of the guys was an emotionally manipulative twerp

Gonna ask in here cause I don't see a label politics thread and if I use an artist's thread to ask someone might take it the wrong way. What's the actual advantage of signing to a major label vs a larger indie in 2023? Better access to vinyl plants? Bigger advance?

Yes to both of those. If you believe you have strong global appeal on a mainstream-ish, then major labels are also good because in some big territories people still buy quite a lot of CDs and major labels usually have better distribution there.

 

Also more money for booking/promo/recording

Plus more influence

I'm hearing lots of "marginal access to payola schemes."

 

They just have bigger marketing budgets and more contacts, it’s not necessary as sinister as the term payola makes it out to be (though in the case of streaming playlists it probably is)

 

(These are all good answers tbc I just abhor capitalism and how it's forced musicians to take smaller and smaller slices of the pie over the last few decades)

 

Yeah, labels help with a lot. Money for press releases, music videos, playlist, tv & radio spots, relationships with touring companies, the works. I get so many emails from publicists every day - it’s not something artists starting out can afford; making it in music is definitely a prohibitive cost and involves relationships with people who can boost your career
