  1. I sort of understand the term bubblegrunge with Charly Bliss’ Guppy, but the tag seems to devalue the artistry/make fun of noisy catchy riffs played by women

I am notoriously cranky about genre names but this one definitely sucks. Bubblegum has been used as derogatory ever since the ‘60s

That playlist linked just confirms that women are making the best indie rock music

Idk what the hell bubblegrunge is but damn it if it isn't a fun word to use as a substitute curse

Even Noel's dig at Taylor is so much funnier than Damon's.

Ugh man watching Albarn show his ass is hilarious but I hate how it always comes to stuff like this with Swifties. As if anyone that opposes Taylor can’t also be a successful, relevant artist

Sure, Albarn says dumb stuff sometimes, but I still really enjoy Gorillaz music. Nothing wrong with him being put in his place.

I do however think rabid and toxic fanbases are really frightening and that's a huge problem of today's culture around idols and such on the internet.

I guess it's a huge problem if you say dumb shit online a lot. I have never been afraid of a rabid fanbase, and I say plenty of dumb shit on here.

I just tend to believe that a lot of people who are fans of artists such as Swift tend to lean younger and have such a strong visceral response to everything she does or things that happen to her that they bring out their pitchforks and want to see people fucking destroyed. It is scary and unhealthy in my opinion, to be so devoted/obsessed with an idol you don't even know just because they write good music.

Sure it's weird, but I think you're going a little overboard with how "scary" it is haha. The problem in this situation is strictly with Albarn's comments. I'm not afraid of something bad happening to him because Taylor Swift's fans got mad.

I'm as wary of stan culture as anyone, and there have definitely been many, many instances of Taylor's fanbase getting out of hand (someone doxxing the Pitchfork writer who gave folklore ONLY an 8.0 is one example). But this was a total unforced error by Albarn, who said something demonstrably untrue that unfortunately played into the way Taylor and other young female artists have often been written off and stripped of agency because they're...young and female. Dude had no idea what he was talking about and made sexist assumptions that even the reporter pushed back on, and then he was still like "Nah, trust me; I'm right on this." And then he apologized by blaming the issue on the journalist for turning his statements into "clickbait," rather than owning the fact that he didn't actually know enough about her or her process to speak with any authority on the subject.

Ultimately, the pile-on is mostly unnecessary, but she also can’t really respond to something like this without the fans getting up in arms, and she was absolutely within her liberty to respond in exactly the way she did.
