I heard they might be coming back. That's very exciting. They really made a hell of a record. "The Professional" is just one of the most incredibly intense songs I've ever heard.

Always thought the cover was gorgeous, too. Especially with the actual metallic effect on the physical version:

  10. Huge Blindside vibes from that snippet. This looks and sounds familiar, yet I can't remember if / when I've last heard their album.

    The rivalry is back on

I haven’t posted in here in forever but this feels like as good of a place as any to put this take.

I really don’t like the current “bubblegrunge” trend and it took the best aspects of grunge (the layered, textured wall of sound guitarscapes that makes Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc so engaging and pairs well with the vocal style) and the best aspects of bubblegum pop (immediately catchy melodies, and leaning more on the pulsing upbeat tempos), threw them away, and made a shitty love child of the remaining elements

I’d love a “bubblegrunge” that actually did the exact opposite of what they’re doing now

Never heard of the genre, who are the bands?

  13. I just looked up “bubblegrunge” and found a playlist that’s just like, a bunch of slowcore and indie rock bands like Hovvdy and Laura Stevenson and Lomelda. That can’t be right lol

    The rivalry is back on

It’s the catchy sub genre name of a lot of the current who’s who of late 2010s/early 2020s prominent indie rock:

(hence putting it here because that’s an unpopular/bad opinion)

a lot of those bands dont really sound alike at all imo

  17. Feels like this is maybe more the fault of a bad genre name than the bands themselves missing the mark? I’ve never heard a Soccer Mommy or a Bully song and thought “this is what would happen if you mixed Pearl Jam with Carly Rae Jepsen” but maybe that’s on me

I do want a subgenre that mixes Pearl Jam and Carly Rae Jepsen tho and that’s my main complaint — that sounds rad

i “get” the name — the common denominator, even though there aren’t a TON of similarities with that group of artists, is a similar vocal style to grunge (especially as it slants towards 90s SSWs) over poppier arrangements than grunge typically used

I could see how Bully would fit the genre I guess, they're definitely on the dirtier side of rock, but it's not really bubblegummy. She goes hard.

ive never heard of that term. i like some of those bands a lot but the only big similarity i can think of is a lot of them play teles thru vox and oranges and shit.

personally my pipedream is a crj grindcore album

    mad

I remember when Spotify wrapped told me my top genre in 2021 was bubblegrunge and I looked at all the artists it put in that category and it seemed to just be rock music made by women lol

I think someone like Soccer Mommy, who mixes the early 90’s aesthetic with poppy alt rock may fit the term bubblegrunge but most of those artists don’t really sound alike
