Grease has such a vile message, though. I kind of hate that show, haha

The Lion King stage show kind of was a Hamilton-like phenomenon in its time, just without all the online discourse.

Yeah the Lion King stage show was pretty revered

  4. I revisit Rent and Evita most frequently, for my part. Hamilton is still in rotation, although my feelings about it these days are more complex than they used to be. (FWIW The Lion King was incredible as a stage production, I was taken for my 13th birthday iirc... could have the year wrong, but it was a birthday around that point in my life)

But also I kinda feel like it's an impossible question because there are so many different styles of musicals, what works for one person REALLY might not work for another. And yes this feeling is likely due to my younger years as a 100% entrenched choir/theater kid.

I was in Sound of Music, High School Musical, and South Pacific in my high school choir days. And hey, two of those are classics...

Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark is the GOAT broadway show, that's my bad opinion.

  7. There's an argument to be made for Cats being the worst successful Broadway musical, perhaps. But worst ever? No chance. I dunno what the answer is because it probably flopped, but somewhere the True Worst One is out there... Waiting.

The Spider-Man show could very well be the worst, it was a total debacle too.

One of my friends had a season pass to the Boston theaters so I got to see Lion King, Come From Away, and Cats. The Lion King in particular was fantastic. West Side Story is probably my favorite though.

    Hamilton is amazing.

The best musicals ever are probably West Side Story, My Fair Lady, or Sweeney Todd. Recently, Come from Away is way up there, as is Hadestown.

    Cats
is too batshit insane to be the worst. It's legitimately fun. I've heard horrible things about that Diana musical though.

i listened to bonnie raitt’s nick of time for the first time and idgi this sounds like most over-produced 80s stuff that people crack jokes about but with better singing

Hadestown, but specifically the off-Broadway original cast recording, NOT the Broadway version which underwent a significant rewrite.

My thermonuclear theatre opinion that starts fights every time I say it around musical kids is that Broadway Hadestown is a hackneyed corporatized mess of what was once an absolutely beautiful composition, and one I consider one of the best pieces of music ever written.

i knew this was going to upset you specifically lol. fwiw i went in really wanting to like it! not trying to offend but it sounded enough like tedeschi trucks, who i enjoy more, that i’d rather just listen to them than go back to this and deal with the production sound

I honestly think Bonnie is the greatest singer America has ever produced in terms of feel, taste, and delivering a lyric. I'd suggest maybe going back to her '70s stuff like Give It Up if the production is too big a hurdle.

We went to see A Christmas Carol, or something with the grouchy old man that hated Christmas whatever it’s actually called, the name escapes me, in sixth grade and we all hated it as we had no idea it was singing lol. No idea what class it was but all i remember is falling asleep and waking up abruptly when some actor was on the balcony right by us shouting to the stage. Literally nothing before that or after for the show itself stayed with me.
