maybe this time, I won't be alright Supporter

Hamilton sucks ass and has paved the way for far too much myopic liberal bullshit

I liked the spectacle of it but really didn’t enjoy anything else. Not really a big musical guy to begin with so that didn’t help.

I go through waves. I enjoyed the songs when I first heard it, then got very annoyed with it quickly, then saw it live and loved the stage production. Right now I'm somewhere in the middle. Some songs are really, really catchy and beautiful and I definitely don't think it's as cringe-y as other people, but I'm not jumping at the chance to watch again.

  6. I could see how a US history buff might be really into the show. But that's definitely not me. "Helpless" was really catchy, but it's no "Defying Gravity" or anything.

the culture surrounding the musical is pretty annoying but the actual performance and craft of it is pretty undeniably great

Leslie Odom Jr. is fucking unbelievable in that show.

    Les Mis > Hamilton

Probably not fair to compare the two though

I respect Hamilton for its place in musical history and the ground it broke especially insofar as opportunities for BIPOC in the theatre industry (which I happen to be a part of), and also at the same time like phaynes mentioned the culture surrounding Hamilton was enough to make me never listen to it.

And to this day, my personal experiences continue to prove to me that I am superior to everybody who ever had a Hamilton phase, ever.

This isn't fully the right thread for it but it will spark bad opinions probably so it kinda is but on the subject of Hamilton...

What's the best musical of all time and what's the worst?

Best thing Hamilton did was give Daveed Diggs a bigger spotlight

Hamilton brought us a new Ja Rule and Ashanti track in the 2010s so I respect it

Haven’t seen it though and also won’t

Worst that I've seen was easily that Willy Wonka shit. That sucked. Cats has bangers on the soundtrack.

West Side Story is probably my favorite and the one I've seen the most. I really like RENT a lot. Les Mis and Phantom are good. When I was a kid I absolutely loved Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
I have major gaps with a lot of the "classics".

i’m not crushing musical tape. just seemed like a huge one that has songs everyone knows.

The Sound of Music is my typical go-to for "greatest musical." I think the consensus pick is usually either West Side Story or Singin' in the Rain.

I saw Lion King as a teenager. It was really impressive. Maybe that's basic but idc.

fwiw i was talking purely stage musicals, since that’s what hamilton is. i like the movie the lion king more but i don’t think anyone is going wild for the stage adaptation the same way, though i guess i could be wrong with that since, again, i’m not just browsing ibdb
