I can only speak for myself, but Turnstile could pass me in Target and I wouldn’t know it was them. Same could be said for pretty much any new-ish band I’ve liked in the past decade. Unless it’s a huge band like Foo Fighters, I normally don’t know band members outside of what I think they might look like in my head.

I think vice or spin did a little profile on the band, they seem like the most chill dudes.

They've been co-opting and profiting off of it too.

Why would I want to gatekeep either band lmao...especially Bloc party...in 2022. Sure ya whatever haha.

That is a really good counterpoint, didn't think of that.

My premise is that race unconsciously or consciously biases people in their musical critiques, but it doesn't have to be the extremes only. Not the best or the worst, it just factors in. It's what takes their first album from AOTY to "all timer". It's what takes another album from really bad to just average.

I mean I said my opinion was a bad one not a hot one, think the audience agrees.

I think arguing that because my argument doesn't apply in all cases makes it invalid doesn't work, it weakens my point of course but my initial opinion didn't identify all cases, folks applied it as such. It's obviously not the case all the time...doesn't mean it won't be the case sometimes.

Right so this is pretty much the point isn’t it? People love Prince’s music because he is a genius. Obviously nowhere close to the same level as Prince but people love the first Bloc Party record because it was a fresh and urgent take on post-punk. But you’re framing love for Bloc Party as performative because *you* don’t understand the hype. I think that’s what most people are taking issue with, rather than the idea our unconscious biases inform our decisions.

  13. It probably should be moved to a different thread. Like Pat said yesterday, what’s being discussed isn’t really an opinion, haha. It more like an ideology. It’s fine to get off track but it’s been over a day, I’d suggest that if anyone has further replies on this to quote the user and respond in the official racism thread. Not trying to police posts, just seems more fitting

It's pretty much dead, some folks have been having their own internal discussions about whatever, they seem happy.

If you're letting my stuff or my presence ruin your day, I don't know what to tell you.

I'm fully capable of understanding that people love things that I don't, especially subjective things like art and music. And I have no judgments for why or what other people love. That's not where the issue is.

I think something you and others are trying to do here is justify why I think this way so you keep going to this argument of "well you don't like the band that must be it", it's not.

Take prince, I like and respect his music and him tremendously, dude deserves all his accolades and more...but I can't confidently tell you that when I found out he was black, whether that shifted my opinion on him or not.

You can reasonably argue that maybe this is rooted in my own problems with race and I'm just projecting my own biases onto others (which is presumably why everyone was calling me a racist), but seeing how entrenched race and society is, how can anyone with 100% certainty be like, ya race never plays a role...that's where my bad opinion comes from. Nothing to do with what I like or dislike.

Franz once commented on my homage shirt because they’re based in Columbus and he’s from Columbus. Way before homage or turnstile were big.

When I was a teenager I used to go through AP magazine and listen to bands based off whether I thought they had attractive members thru my lens as a straight dumbass rural teen with bad taste. The side effect of this besides being an incredibly dumb way to discover music lol was that I did miss out on a lot of bands with women in them and had a narrow lens. I'm sure subconscious racism also factored into that lense. I know thats not exactly what's being discussed but the convo reminded me how dumb I used to be

I feel like a lot of people in the scene back then only listened to women based on whether they are attractive or not. That still happens today, but fortunately not to the same extent.

If band members had eyeliner and the scene hair with the half hair over the eye and a studded belt they were immediately added to my iPad classic. I had only the highest standards
