    hmmm

Whichever one you decide, it's clear that @cherrywaves's version is a better name.

6 or 7 for sure. He got lazy chugging on the low end with his 8s and 9s.

I do think all the weed has been detrimental to his music writing in addition to other stuff.

The title track in particular is one my favorite riffs he’s ever written.

I think it's obvious that Stephen's contributions are more textural on the last couple of albums. I believe the title track on Ohms and Phantom Bride on Gore are the only recent songs that were essentially his compositions and apart from that his stuff is more about parts of songs or adding texture to someone else's idea. From the way they've talked about it, Sergio contributes a lot to the songwriting process so there's probably less room for Stephen than there used to be.

My approach for Stephen using less strings is in vein with Peter Gabriel banning cymbals for the drum parts of Melt, take away the other strings and make him come up with riffs due to the restriction in creative freedom.

    couple thoughts:

    - I have learned over the past few years that my preference for snares leans heavily in favor of higher tunings. I prefer the space they occupy in the mix that way, generally. for heavy music, especially, I think snares that venture into “trashy” territory (when done tastefully) can really add to the aggression of a song. now, that said, I think there is a point where it can get to be too much and St Anger definitely ventures into that territory. the ring is absolutely out of control (it’s especially hilarious any time he does a 16th note roll or something) and it’s honestly a major draw for me but I think I love it in a “so bad it’s good” kinda way. my enjoyment of the record as a whole is kinda in that territory, I think it’s just absolutely amazing and fascinating that a band that huge put out a record that sounds like that.

    - Steph has consistently commented that going back to 6 strings is never gonna happen, even the songs he wrote on 6 strings he plays on 7 strings with the highest string just tuned to match the string above it. he says it’s more comfortable for his hands to play 7 and 8 strings. anyway, Ohms is a top 3 Deftones record for me personally so I don’t really have much of an issue with the course they’re on. my favorite period for Steph’s guitar work is S/T (also my fav record by them), but all in all the draw to the band for me has always been more so how all the members fit together to serve the song rather than any one member’s individual contribution. but more often than not if I am hyperfocusing on any member’s part it’s Abe’s.

Abe’s drumming imo is what makes the band stand out

I haven’t been to a lot of concerts relative to most people in here - I’ve been lucky enough to see a couple of my favorite artists (including Death Cab, Frightened Rabbit and Third Eye Blind in a legendary two day stretch in 2011)

but I did get to see Deftones at the House of Blues in Vegas and I’ll always have that

  18. May be a weird hangup but it always bothered me how they recorded Death Magnetic in standard tuning but play it half step down anyway. I still got demoitis from a couple songs because of that.

saw this exchange between Albini and Eve 6 dude on twitter earlier and decided to listen to both Razorblade Suitcase and August and Everything After back to back and see what I think of both having never listened to either in full before.

halfway through Razorblade Suitcase and this record fucking WHIPS. the jam in Insect Kin seriously had me so hyped lol. trying to use this album as a weapon against Albini is fucking asinine to me and the most ineffective gotcha I can imagine. also, to be fair I think they both come off poorly in that exchange.

Bush were a very easy target at the time, unfairly. Eve 6 guy even admits later in the thread that it's a good album.

yeah, I did see he said it was good. to me it was dumb to even bring into the conversation at all. but oh well, not like dumb tweets are uncommon from Eve 6 lol. interested to see if I can hear what dude hears in Counting Crows at all.
yeah, I didn’t mean to represent it as anything else. didn’t seem genuinely spiteful on either end. I just didn’t think either of them looked great in that exchange regardless.

anyway Razorblade Suitcase is almost over and I like it but I wish they had an editor. that said, there wasn’t anything that was offensive or bad at all just think trimming some edges could have done wonders for replayability. the album sounds fucking great. excellent example of what I love about Albini’s approach.

I’m kinda of two minds on August and Everything After so far. musically it’s 100% in my wheelhouse but I don’t think I like Adam’s vocals all that much. like, I don’t think he’s bad… his melodies are good, I just don’t think I care for his tone overall. I get why ppl love it for sure. on Anna Begins rn and I think it’s my fav so far tbh, snare sound is godly.

edit: so I am liking this album more as it goes on. pretty much from Anna Begins onward the album sinks into a vibe that I much prefer to the first few songs. not that they’re worlds apart or anything, just a slight shift that I greatly appreciated.
