Grunge was never my favorite genre or anything, as much as I loved Nirvana. I think most of the popular grunge bands sound pretty different in a lot of cases. I always identified with Nirvana's punk influence, but I liked Pearl Jam and Soundgarden too, but never really thought of them as that similar to Nirvana. Then stuff like the Melvins is even further separated, even if you can trace the throughline. I've never truly dived deep into the genre but what I've heard is pretty diverse.

nirvana were a punk band. most of the other grunge bands loved punk but also classic rock to a degree that never appeared in nirvana's music

Yeah I guess a lot of their songs are punk songs. Maybe in Nirvana's case I was just not a big fan of the way he sings. I think maybe I need to try again

    nirvana is a punk band
pearl jam is a classic rock band
soundgarden and alice in chains and melvins are metal bands
screaming trees are like psych rock

the only one you can credibly say is in the same lane as nirvana is mudhoney

I do here overlap with Nirvana there (that PJ song) though, if only in the way they sing

honestly the first and most recent jerry era albums aren’t bad either. the dinosaur one is bad bad but one bad album of six or whatever is pretty good.

I'd rank Mellon Collie over any Nirvana album personally, but I've loved SP since I was 14 and only finally gave Nirvana an honest try this year. Fwiw Nirvana is almost certainly the band I've listened to most this year so I do think they live up to their hype.

My hot SP take is that Sweet Sweet is among the greatest things Billy ever recorded.

my Bad Opinion of the day is that Zeitgeist is a much better record than Oceania, Monuments, Shiny and Cyr. actually bummed it’s impossible to find on streaming and i have to listen to the CD when i want to hear it.

Never listened to more than a single or two after Zeitgeist but production aside there were some good songs on that album. Tarantula is so massive

one issue with zeitgeist is ... all of the best songs are b-sides, particularly "stellar" and "ma belle"

Zeitgeist and Oceania are just as good as the Pumpkins albums before them.

Pumpkins were my favourite band the entire time I was a teenager so I have plenty of bad SP takes.

I think another issue with Zeitgeist is the mixing job sucks ass. Billy’s vocals are so high up in the mix, it’s like oil and water.

I haven’t listened to Alice In Chains but I’ve been told their jar of flies ep is their best work. Is that true and should I listen to that one first?
