I agree. I’d much rather, like, compare Outkast and the Talking Heads. Or Outkast and Earth Wind and Fire. But then people would have to have a working knowledge of more than just a couple bands, and sometimes that’s a big ask.

I don’t really see the point of trying to do a better or worse comparison like that with artists across wildly different genres/eras. Like how does one even begin to figure out the supposed metrics here

this is all valid and correct, but how else are people supposed to get RT’s and likes??

should I make a Music Forum General Chat thread, a la the Entertainment Forum's

sometimes I just have misc. music thoughts about, like, some artist from decades ago I've been getting into, and this thread is kinda the closest thing to one, but it's specifically for bad opinions, so

Yeah well Blood Incantation is better than Silverchair and you'll never convince me otherwise

To me this thread is for good opinions that I know others will think are bad

Btw. I also think simple comparisons like that don’t make a lot of sense but I gotta say I was hoping for more protest :crylaugh: Stirring this pot full of reasonable soup is no fun

I think Frank Ocean is boring, but I love his take on Moon River and wish he would make a Great American Songbook album

i take back what i said @Morrissey. sorry. someone saying “i think frank ocean is boring” definitely tells me something about them.

Frank Ocean is boring about 40-45% of the time

Yeah maybe if the 40-45% is exclusively pre-Channel Orange

It’s definitely not Blonde that’s for sure

Troll Spo is like Prince when his name was a glyph. You can see the skill set is still there, but he’s just not using it right.

my worst (as in least popular) opinions are usually just some variant of "the old stuff was not, in fact, better". of course this is very far from universal, but in general I find mid- and late-period work is so often more rewarding than early work. (I am forced to admit this may simply be a function of getting older lol)

I'm with you on this one.

I was just thinking about this morning regarding My Morning Jacket when I saw the blurb about a new album. I remember the lukewarm reviews they got in '08 when Evil Urges came out (which I also disagreed with), and they pretty much stopped being a "cool" band from a critical standpoint.

But now here we are 12+ years later, and they have released 3 good-to-great albums since then, and presumably with another one on the way.

felt like balancing the scales a bit and saying Channel Orange is a top 5 record for me. lots I could say about why it resonates with me so much, and how it’s helped me and informed me as a songwriter and in album craft and all that good stuff, but I almost feel it would be antithetical to the thread to try and be productive here so I will save it for another time :)

Blonde is not far behind either btw but I have personally never felt like it flows as well as a record as CO, though it does have several of his absolute best songs.

Yeah I still like Channel Orange slightly more than Blonde too but they're both phenomenal albums
