I don't read reviews but I guess I do pay attention to (mostly online) word of mouth where if I keep hearing an album positively praised my curiosity peaks and I am more inclined to check it out. But I'm millennial trash and tl;dr on reviews

Talking about albums with people online definitely serves a similar purpose!

Sometimes I go and read my Amazon CD reviews from like ten plus years ago when I want a laugh

I used to keep a notepad file on my computer of album reviews I wrote just for me and I'd assign them arbitrary percentage scores that weren't based on any sort of rubric lol

My bad opinion regarding reviews is that I enjoy Anthony Fanta-no's content a lot LMAO.

Although this definitely wouldn't be the case had he not massively improved as a person over the years.

EDIT: oh cool filter guys lol

Dude's politics drift further left and become more progressive seemingly every year so I'm perfectly comfortable with it

I have a knack for latching onto annoying YouTube personalities like him and Jared Dines which I chock up to the fact that I too am annoying as shit. ADHD, man. What can you do.

Yeah it absolutely can. Especially when you have the right people to engage with.

I will add to the reviewers conversation that I've gotten tremendous value from AllMusic as a resource. Not to say they're right about every album, but I'm not sure I could be the type of music fan I am without that site's work.

I read the occasional throwback review because they are usually more than just reviews, but that’s it

It’s weird how I like discussing music with people but one person presenting their thoughts in article form via a review as opposed to message board chat just completely turns me off haha. I might peek at the star ratings when I’m doing a deep dive into an album on wiki though.

  13. I love the writing on Stereogum, especially the Premature Evaluations and The Number Ones. I also read any reviews written by my friends or fellow Chorus contributors. Don’t read too many other reviews anymore, unless I’m obsessed with an album and need to find any related content

    Still A Threat Prestigious

I like that when it’s about a throwback album, like when Jeff Weiss wrote about MMLP or Oops I Did It Again this year, but in reviews for current albums I usually don’t like that at all. My introduction to music reviews was The Source and later more music magazines. So, one small column telling me what the album is like. That’s how I still like it. I guess in the age of streaming it has become redundant, but then again that’s also the word I would use to describe a random long ass Pitchfork review.

AllMusic is great. I remember reading the reviews on iTunes pages for albums back in the early 2000s and really enjoying them, not realizing they were AllMusic. There was one about Butch Walker's Letters that pointed out some of the influences he was drawing from on that album. Stuff like that can be formative.

Stereogum is top-notch. I also love their Anniversary pieces. Just really thoughtful, free-form music writing.

  22. tbh reviews became less important with the age of streaming - it's just easier to form an opinion now then in like 2004

    Absolutely.

I’ve also always liked its ethos that basically every band, critical darling or fan favorite, probably has at least a 4 star record and then scaling the rest of the catalog proportionally. Helps you to give everyone a fair shake.
