If I listened to that album now I’d probably still vibe with it

I don't know anyone looks at Gorillaz discography and thinks the first album is their best considering how wonderful Demon Days and Plastic Beach are. Their previous two efforts have had some hits as well, but their new video series "Song Machine" is putting out some of the best work they've done in years.

They're also a good gateway into other artists and styles some people may not have given a real chance before like Popcaan and Little Simz. They also have some great stuff from immensely talented and respected artists like Lou Reed and Bobby Womack.

I just find it shocking to think that "some people liked Green Day and discovered Clint Eastwood" is what some people chock Gorillaz up to.

This is one of their newest songs from this year.

My friend, I can say with 100% certainty that the last song anyone I know in real life has cared about from Gorillaz has been "Feel Good Inc.", and that's probably the only song anyone can name from that album. I actually searched "Gorillaz" in my phone to see if anyone has talked about them. Aside from a reference to FGI and some singles off the first tape, the only other mention is me saying that Ascension and Spotlight from that one record are good and my friend responding "I had no idea they were still a thing"

I think liking a band that exposes people to other artists and genres is a good thing.

Again, I don't even dislike them! I think they're good and this thread got me to revisit the Vince Staples track from that one record. I just had no idea they were this revered, lol. I'm not lying when I say they hold absolutely no relevancy to anyone that I know in real life aside from, as previously mentioned, a few of my students who are 15 and getting into music that's a little deeper than what's on the radio. (Although I do believe Clint Eastwood might still get played on 104.5)

Coldplay are consistently pretty excellent. Their last one was just a top-to-bottom really good record.

Everyone's just going to hate the most successful bands.

U2, Kings of Leon, Imagine Dragons, Green Day, Twenty One Pilots, Coldplay, Mumford and Sons...the fuckin' Eagles

It's one of the few constants you can count on in this universe that if something is successful, a lot of people will feel it necessary to predicate some of their cred on hating it.

Well yeah it’s a matter of probability. The more people that are exposed to a band/song, the more likely you are to get someone who thinks that shit sucks ass. Simple math.

  13. I mean, do *most people* care about Oasis (et al) beyond wonderwall?Like they have a lot of great songs but most people remember the hit or two, and if you asked them about them that’s all they’d know, same with gorillaz. At least in America!

I just don't know how you thought I was going to react to "my friends and I don't listen to them or pay attention to them so clearly that's a good baseline for how everyone else must perceive them as well."

And please don't go "tell me where I said that" because otherwise your comment has absolutely no relevance to the conversation.

It's fine you don't listen to them or know they are still a thing. That's how I am with a lot of bands, mostly because there's billions of bands and there's no earthly way I'm going to care or pay attention to all of them especially if they are outside of my normal music rotation.

I do have to thank Gorillaz for putting me on to Vince Staples and Danny Brown

  20. For the record I think oasis rules, but I bet if you asked people 25 and under the only thing they’d know is Wonderwall!

Absolutely not. Even with some classic 90s albums, nothing Oasis has done is as interesting musically as what Albarn has done with Gorillaz over the past ~20yrs now.

And calling Mike Judge alt-right is still objectively dumb so there’s not really any “redemption” to be had there ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  22. Maybe even 30 and under, idk. If we’re judging off what people we know are into, I think I could play champagne supernova at a bonfire and people would be like ‘this is p good but idk what it is’

going through the last few pages is great bc you start out mocking people who like Gorillaz as being like “I don’t normally like rap but...” but then you out yourself as thinking their most old head kind of songs were their peak lol. Embarrassed for you bud
