Ghost, for example. They’re very far from what I would consider metal but apparently they’re known as a metal band and I’d say they’re hard rock, at best.

Like, who deems what genre a band is or isn’t in the first place? That’s more what I’m referring to.

    I was right. Prestigious

I never use genre names to describe artists/bands anymore, most things I listen to/talk about sound like some combination of something else

apologies if that sentence made no sense I’m pretty stoned and there’s no way I’m proofreading

Probably not unpopular in this community, but I actually love it when an artist’s setlist is filled with their new album (I mean, obviously as long as it doesn’t suck ass). But it seems the average concert goer hates hearing “the new stuff” and only goes to shows for nostalgia

it's def cool when a band is excited about playing the material they just you know worked on and are appreciative of fan love

I’m happy with that if the music is good and am able to be familiar with it before the show. But it bums me out seeing a band I love and 75% are songs I’ve never heard once.

I was trying to describe myself to someone

I remember it being pretty popular around here (or AP as it might have still been then?) and feeling a bit of an odd one out. I never saw some great artistic movement in what they'd done. Sounded to me like they'd just slowed what they already did and turned down the gain.

I really liked where they were going with Spring Songs too. Boo hiss.

Nah, I’ll keep it here. There’s no reason to go and incite rage in people in their own threads, haha

    forbidden chalice.

Murder Your Memory is amazing, Chlorine is cool, and the rest of the album is alright with a couple cool moments (Liar's Love's catchy chorus, for example). I have to be in a very specific mood to listen to it. It's probably my favorite entry from them but I think I revisit Floral Green more.

Not trying to cast any aspersions, but how old are you? Harsh vocals are not an originating or essential component of metal.

    33. Be that as it may, harsh vocals have been consistent in all metal I’ve listened to growing up so I’m not into it otherwise.

Unfortunately not all metal can sound like Full of Hell and that would be boring as hell if it all did. I agree that attaching a genre tag to something is kind of silly and should be enjoyed without any preconceived ideas about it. Especially nowadays with sub, sub, sub genres and bands blurring the lines and not fitting perfectly into a box. BUT people do like certain styles of music and a general genre tag is necessary. Saying that bands like Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, etc. aren't under the umbrella of metal didn't pave the path for the countless bands I am sure you listen to is a bit crazy.

Good thing I didn’t say any of that at all.

I said that I don’t consider them “real” metal but also that I’d never tell someone they were wrong for calling them metal. And I never said anything close to those bands not being influential or important to later generations of bands.

Just curious, what are some examples of "real" metal to you?

My favorite metal band is Dillinger Escape Plan. I also love The Locust and Zao and The Chariot. Those are off the top of my head but those are some examples of super aggressive or abrasive vocals that I’m into.
