have you ever been sad

 

i have and a lot if not most of the similar artists i've heard have had a profound effect on me, but not this record. it's not bad or anything but it doesn't resonate with me really

 

The julien baker and phoebe records remind me of Lana del Rey in their sparseness. The phoebe one finished high on my EOTY but even I don’t listen to it much at all bc it really only hits when it’s exactly what I need.

 

I haven't spent much time with Julien Baker's new album for that reason, but Stranger In The Alps is basically tied with (DAMN.) for my number 1 last year

That’s how I feel about Julien Baker. Pretty much goes in one ear and out the other for me. Stranger In the Alps, on the other hand, is possibly my AOTY.

 

really interesting haha. they are similar styles and tones, maybe they detriment each other to my ears a bit so close together.

I mean, reactions to art definitely can be wrong. E.g. if you listen to Cannibal Corpse and get a boner.

Came up on a free ticket to see Julien recently so I went thinking maybe seeing it live would help it click.... it did not. She's a great live singer though

 

Still don’t quite understand why the two need to be constantly pitted against each other.

 

two acclaimed albums that came out at similar times of year that are sonically and thematically in the same wheelhouse? don't see how it's different than japandroids and cloud nothings being compared or kendrick/vince or sza/kelela

It’s weird in pretty much all of those scenarios too. Don’t like the idea of taking two artists who are really only similar in that they’re women/femme and having a pissing contest about which one is better. I don’t really agree that they’re sonically or “thematically” similar.

I just think you should discuss one without having to mention the other in a negative way.

 

i mean these artists are being brought up in the same breath for a reason, maybe you don't feel that way but others do. i will agree that these comparisons are often used solely because of gender lines but i don't think this is one of those cases. it's not an "every band with a leading lady in rock music sounds like paramore" scenario here
