To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Tool. The songwriting is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the riffs will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Maynard's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these songs, to realize that they're not just shreddy- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Tool truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the statements in Maynard's existencial lyric "Fuck L Ron Hubbard" which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Adam Jones's genius unfolds itself on their speaker systems. What fools... how I pity them.

I love Thrice, and I like the album as a whole, but “The Artist in the Ambulance” is a bad song. Just as bad as Brand New’s “Archers.”

I can see shapes when I listen to them, you plebs probably can't even hum their songs correctly

 

The Gaslight Anthem has always been am incredibly boring band with terribly cheesy lyics.

 

I like Tool, Lateralus and Ten Thousand Days are awesome. Fuck Tool fans though.

 

On the topic of "math rock" or whatever. A friend is a huge fan of The Dillinger Escape Plan and was telling us all about them (this was years ago) and got us all together to let us listen (back when CD's were the main source of listening you see). After like ten minutes of him telling us about how great this shrieking and frenetic music was a friend realizes it's the same song over and over. For like, 20 minutes. And our super fan friend couldn't tell that all we'd been listening to was "Highway Robbery" again and again haha

 

Archers is good. Artist is a good pop punk song but a bad thrice song

 

Both are good songs but I greatly prefer Thrice to Brand New.
