When artists do exclusives I end up never listening to it or yeah dling the leak. A lot of those artists who do exclusives are still selling a lot so I can't really imagine it changing any time soon. I feel like it's gonna become more common for a while

I don't think I've bought an album in a year due to streaming. Feel bad about it but it becomes harder to justify a purchase when I can listen to it anytime anyway

Not that I don't plan on buying albums. I put them on my to-buy list and never get around to it

paying for digital content feels weird to me and the problem with cds is I tend not to listen to them and they just gather dust, or I upload them to my computer and they gather dust

Yeah I have a steak of cds sitting in my closet not seeing any use.

And I quit buying vinyl because I don't have a real setup and can't afford one

Yeah I'm in that weird boat myself. When I buy cds I just put it on my iTunes and the cd gathers dust afterwards. I have a huge box full that idk what to do with. But I lost my ipod cable so I never open itunes anymore anyway so I havent digitally bought an album or uploaded one in a while. I actually have a car now that can play cds lol so at least I can listen to them there.

I'll throw in that that blind love for the current wave of black metal is nauseating. Black metal isn't all that good to begin with.

I find the disdain for djent bands even more upsetting than the hate on deathcore. These are extremely talented musicians who receive hate for non-sensical things like "over production".

I genuinely believe that with some of these bands who don't release music for an insane amount if time that there's a lack of consideration for the fans, and even that it implies they're in it for the money. To see bands so young like Brand New and Glassjaw wait so many years between albums is preposterous to me. I get something like David Bowie retiring for ten years to focus on his family. He called it quits and had a long career behind him. Guys in their twenties or thirties touring nonstop but not consistently releasing music blows my mind.

Once you get a car with an audio jack they just kind of take up space though. I still prefer physical media, but it's starting to get weird because I barely use them at all

I thought people only have physical media for collection purposes?

Unpopular opinion: Digital media gives you the best overall sound relative to any other platform.

I have opinions on music streaming sites but I don't know if I should even voice them in this thread hahaha

  12. I tried Spotify last year and it destroyed my data usage for like three months in a row, so no thanks. Someone told me to just download and listen offline, but that seems to entirely defeat the purpose of the service.

I have unlimited talk text and more importantly data for $60, so no problem there

I save a lot of stuff offline. I tend to save a lot of stuff in my music and then cycle things in and out so i have fresh stuff. It does me well except for long trips where I usually pull out my ipod tho yeah I need to find the cable cause it's dead rn.

  15. Yeah I used to have unlimited data, but a while back I had to make an adjustment to my plan to add someone on, and thy wouldn't let me keep it. If they had, I'd be all about streaming.

If they're only in it for the money, the absolute worst strategy is releasing music sparsely. They make less money that way. It says entirely the opposite. As for "consideration towards the fans", no band owes fans anything.

You've got a good point, about them making less money without producing albums. I personally disagree about bands not owing fans anything. Fans pay their bills. Without fans, there probably wouldn't be a band or any tours. Do cashiers owe customers service? Yeah. I know it's not quite the same, but being in a band is a job, and jobs have requirements.

how is downloading something to save it offline via a streaming service any different than downloading something illegally or purchasing it and having to put it on your phone? the point is that it's legal and offers a wider catalog with easier accessibility than any other option. streaming is good on wifi, which for most people using the services is probably most of the time they want to use the service. otherwise it makes sense to have a smaller library available whenever you want it.

    I love Spotify.

  20. It's not -- that's my point. I'd rather just cut out the middle man and save a few bucks a month.

A wider catalog than what? The vast endlessness of the internet? I can't help but disagree with that. And that's great for most people, but my opportune times for streaming are in my car, at work, or at the gym... none of which I have access to wifi (most people I know don't either, so I'm genuinely curious where that assumption is coming from).

Bottom line, I'm perfectly fine with having a smaller library on my phone (currently about 1500 on mine) to access whenever I'm not at home. I'm just not going to pay monthly for it. Doesn't seem worth it to me.

Oh yeah, I was gonna say something about that as well - the over production bit, that is. I'm of the opinion that complaining about "over production" as to why some piece of music is objectively bad is by far the stupidest complaint somebody can have with an album. I understand that with some styles lo-fi quality is part of the charm, but that's besides the point.

    Agreed.

Modern Baseball. Their new album is actually quite good in places but their old stuff is just generic angsty teen hung over a girl stuff that in places seems as bad as the sort of thing Taking Back Sunday and other pop punk bands are slated for. Yet they are heralded as this clever, outstanding emo band by so many. I don't get it.

Tbh their acronym (?) MoBo is more offensive than the music

considering how hard it can be to find working links for many albums vs how easy it is to just search them on the service, streaming comes out ahead just in terms of accesibility, which is what i said.

i cant think of many jobs indoors that dont have wifi or internet at this point. ive never been to a gym without wifi either.

it just seems weird to act like theres no other option besides chewing through all your data when thats never been my experience at all and i dont know anyone who has had that experience. if you have stuff saved to your phone you immediately cut down on the data usage significantly when you do decide you want to listen to something that's not there. just how i think theyre designed to be used.
