im not offended its just not hard at all, for me, to understand why other people love a band even if i dont love them. you dont have to feel the same way to see why other people feel a certain way. i mean i literally just told you. people connect to the lyrics, those albums came out during important times in people's lives and they connected and that connection lives on. if i say that and you're still scratching your head like "i just dont get it" then i have no idea what more to say. its really not hard to get.

But that's literally just the reason anyone likes any album. What is it about TDS's lyrics, music, whatever that people connected with so much? That's what I don't get personally because nothing ever stood out to me. Maybe "I will never understand" isn't the right way to phrase it, of course I get that people love things I don't love, and there's also a lot I love that people hate. I'm not like sitting behind my computer screaming that no one should love the Dangerous Summer or even confused why someone would - I just mean when I hear them I don't hear anything particularly special and so I don't understand; on a personal level, what it is other people are hearing that they connect with so much. I think we're just on different pages here honestly

well no lyrics are not like why i like any album, especially the hundreds of albums i love with zero lyrics. people connect to the relatability of AJ's writing, if you dont relate thats why you dont like them as much. people heard the lyrics on reach for the sun and war paint and thought "wow im going through the exact same thing" or "thats exactly how i feel or how i think" etc. and they see themselves in the album. im just not seeing whats so hard to understand here. i guess i just dont have much of a problem seeing what people connect to in a lot of music that i dont personally connect to the majority of the time. obviously there are certain bands i just flat out will never get the love for but if you can understand people liking TDS you should be able to understand people loving TDS.

not sure if this is unpopular but genre is such an artificial construct
I can't think of a single band I can describe with just a genre or a brief synopsis, if an alien came down tomorrow and asked me to explain The Beatles to them I couldn't

I'm awful at answering the question "what does artist x sound like" because for so many artists it's nearly impossible to pigeonhole them into just one or two categories. Like, Circa Survive is a rock band, but the same kind of rock band that Manchester Orchestra is? Nope. So I feel you on this.

    hmmm

Genres aren't artificial constructs but they are an insufficient way to describe, let alone assess a band.

Yes I get what you're saying. Its not so much genuine confusion as much as me just saying I don't feel that way myself, but now I'm just left wanting to give them another listen haha

Genre lines are definitely weird and just getting harder and harder to differentiate these days as more genres incorporate influence from others, and that's really cool.

I dread when people ask what kind of music X artist is. I never have any idea what to say without feeling like I'm really not capturing what they really sound like.

i hate when people ask what kind of music i like because listing basic genres doesn't really describe the music i listen to and listing niche subgenres just confuses people

I just say I like good music and then refuse to expand on it.

I normally just give the old bullshit "I'm into pretty much everything you can think of." I'll normally specify that most of my favorite artists tend to be rock-leaning but I don't exclusively listen to rock/metal.

I love too when people ask me what concert I'm going to and I don't know how to tell them "there is literally no way you've ever come even remotely close to hearing about this band" without sounding like a prick, so then I just tell them "this band called X" and they look at me all confused.

i usually say the name of the band and they say "what kind of music are they" and we're back to square 1

saying I like everything sounds like a cop out but it's pretty much true, I don't just listen to one artist or style of music

I just name a few groups I've been listening to recently. Anything else seems to come across a bit wanky.

"I listen to everything really" sounds like you're trying too hard to come across as open minded.

I just say that I have fairly eclectic tastes and then give broad descriptions of the sort of things I tend to take a keener interest in.

A while back I was at a bridal shower where u play the dumb games and one of them was a "how well do you know the bride" game that asked what is their favorite kind of music. I would never be able to do that for myself. There'd be like 20 different right answers.

when people ask me what i like i just say drake (i do like him), which makes them think i'm vapid as fuck and don't ask anything else

later that day i'll share a song from a very obscure band on twitter and they're like wtf?

and i'm like booyah thought you had me figured out huh

    music is cool
